Mitchell Starc’s bouncer forced Bairstow to do a ballet-turn to clean his own wicket with his bat and end his smooth stay at the crease. Crawling to a total of 157, Australians looked down and out with the ball as English batsmen played them without any problems and scored runs all over the ground.
Australia didn’t get off to the greatest of starts, as they lost 3 early wickets to cripple themselves right from the start. While David Warner got out by a ripper from Jofra Archer, Alex Carey played an expensive shot and paid the price in the form of his wicket. After that, Steve Smith had a brain fade moment as he tried to run a single straight from the hands of Eoin Morgan. However, Aaron Finch along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Ashton Agar propelled the team to a score of 157.
In response, English openers didn’t have any problems as they towed the bowlers all over the park. Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler connected from the middle of their bats right from the word go. Again, a dangerous Mitchell Starc was not to be seen as he displayed another sub-par bowling performance. However, a bouncer from him allowed him to add 1 wicket to his bowling column despite. Against the run of play, Starc bowled a firing quick bouncer, which Bairstow tried to fetch but was unable to make contact with the bat and did a ‘ballet-turn’ to hit his stumps.
Before getting out, the opener hit two good-looking fours and looked effective in his short stay at the crease. However, as events happened, he did not know where his wicket was after getting beaten by the pace of the delivery. Despite a turn that would have earned praise if he was a dancer, he ended up hitting his own wicket and managed to get himself out, which the Australian bowlers were not able to do until that point in the game.
Hit-wicket alert
What an unfortunate way to get dismissed.
