New Delhi: Type-2 diabetes refers to a state wherein blood sugar levels increase drastically owing to insulin resistance or low insulin levels in the body. The condition indicates that the pancreas is unable to release sufficient levels of insulin to convert sugar into energy for cells thereby trigger multiple health problems ranging from obesity to heart disease and limb amputation risk in extreme cases.

While a low-carbohydrate, low-sugar and high-protein diet are recommended for patients of type-2 diabetes, a new study published in the Nature journal reveals that the same effect can be replicated with a drink in your kitchen that adds a distinct flavour to your meals. Keep reading to find out what it is.

The ingredient that is blessed with a blood sugar lowering prowess

Often used in Chinese and Asian food, vinegar intake is linked to better blood sugar levels. Upon investigation on how vinegar supplementation impacts the glycemic index of a bread meal with high carbohydrate content.

For this, participants were given three levels of vinegar along with a portion of white bread containing 50 grams of carbs as breakfast after an overnight fast. The same was compared to the impact in another group who were given carbs with no vinegar supplementation. Participants were analysed for satiety, glucose and insulin. It was observed that within 30 minutes, the highest level of vinegar lowered blood glucose responses in 30-45 minutes and insulin response in 15-30 minutes. Low and intermediate levels had the same effect 30 and 15 minutes after intake. Furthermore, satiety was linked to acetic acid levels – the amount of vinegar that was consumed.

For better blood sugar control and diabetes management, experts recommend 2.5 hours of exercise or physical activity per week, a healthy diet and weight loss. Activities that make you feel breathless – from brisk walking to jogging, climbing stairs or doing strenuous household chores and gardening.

Weight loss is one of the most effective ways of managing blood sugar levels for type-2 diabetes. A low-carb diet not only manages body weight but also keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control.
