Aggies end Tide streak

UNDATED (AP) — You can expect to see a new No. 1 in Sunday’s Associated Press college football poll after Alabama ended its 19-game winning streak.

Seth Small made a 28-yard field goal as time expired to give Texas A&M a 41-38 triumph over the top-ranked Crimson Tide. The Tide had scored 21 straight points to take a 38-31 lead, but the Aggies tied it when Zach Calzada connected with Ainias (ah-NEE’-uhs) Smith for a 25-yard touchdown strike with three minutes left.

Calzada threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns as A&M handed Alabama its first loss since Nov. 30, 2019 against Auburn.

Oklahoma and Texas just completed the highest-scoring game in the history of the Red River rivalry.

Kennedy Brooks led the sixth-ranked Sooners to a 55-48 victory over No. 21 Texas. Brooks ran for 217 yards and two go-ahead touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 33-yard romp with three seconds left.

The Sooners overcame a 21-point deficit, matching the second-largest comeback in program history.

Caleb Williams completed 15 of 24 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns after replacing Spencer Rattler, who had two turnovers in the first half that led to Texas touchdowns.

The best matchup of the day had third-ranked Iowa rallying for a 23-20 win against No. 4 Penn State. Spencer Petras (PEE’-trahs) threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini (rah-GAY’-nee) to complete the Hawkeyes’ comeback from a two-touchdown deficit.

Iowa picked off four passes and stifled the Nittany Lions after quarterback Sean Clifford was knocked out of the game in the first half. Backup Ta’Quan Roberson was just 7 of 21 for 34 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Checking out Saturday’s other completed top-25 action:

— Stetson Bennett passed for 231 yards and two touchdowns in leading second-ranked Georgia past No. 18 Auburn, 34-10. The nation’s top defense gave up only its second touchdown of the year before beating the Tigers for the fifth straight time.

— CJ Stroud passed for five touchdowns and seventh-ranked Ohio State reached the end zone on its first eight possessions in a 66-17 crushing of Maryland. The Buckeyes freshman quarterback was 24 for 33 for 406 yards, including two touchdowns each to star wideouts Chris Olave (AH’-lah-vay) and Garrett Wilson.

— Ninth-ranked Michigan beat Nebraska, 32-29 on a 39-yard field goal by Jake Moody with 1:24 remaining. Moody’s fourth field goal came after Wolverines defensive back Brad Hawkins forced quarterback Adrian Martinez to fumble, returning it 19 yards to the Nebraska 18.

— Boise State pulled off an impressive upset as the Broncos forced four turnovers in a 26-17 win at No. 10 BYU. Cyrus Habibi-Likio ran for a season-high 75 yards and a touchdown in Boise’s first win in its last three meetings with the Cougars.

— Eleventh-ranked Michigan State earned a 31-13 win at Rutgers as Jalen Nailor caught touchdown passes of 63, 63 and 65 yards from Payton Thorne. Nailor rolled up a career-high 221 yards on five catches for the Spartans, who are 6-0 for the first time in six years.

— No. 14 Notre Dame completed two scoring drives over the final 2 ½ minutes to beat Virginia Tech, 32-29. Jonathan Doerer won it by nailing a 48-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining. It came after Jack Coan threw for a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie it with 2:26 left.

— No. 16 Kentucky is 6-0 for the first time since 1950 after Will Levis threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more scores in a 42-21 blowout of LSU. Chris Rodriguez Jr. rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

— Matt Corral threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Sanders with 67 seconds remaining before 17th-ranked Mississippi stopped a two-point conversion try on the final play for a wild 52-51 win over No. 13 Arkansas. The Razorbacks scored a TD as time expired as Warren Thompson hauled in a nine-yard pass from KJ Jefferson.

— No. 19 Wake Forest pulled out a 40-37 overtime victory at Syracuse on A.T. Perry’s third TD of the afternoon. Perry caught a 22-yard pass from Sam Hartman in the left corner of the end zone, six plays after the Orange kicked a field goal to go ahead in OT.

— Emory Jones had a career-high four touchdowns passes as 20th-rated Florida punished Vanderbilt, 42-0. Dameon Pierce ran for a pair of TDs and grabbed a scoring pass in helping the Gators beat the Commodores for the 30th time in their last 31 meetings.

— Tanner Mordecai threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns to help No. 24 SMU down Navy, 31-24. The Mustangs trailed by 14 in the second quarter until Bryan Massey scored on a 95-yard kickoff return.

— No. 25 San Diego State is 5-0 after Greg Bell rushed for 111 yards and a TD in their 31-7 pounding of New Mexico. Jordan Brookshire furnished a pair of rushing touchdowns and Chance Bell reached the end zone for the Aztecs.

Dodgers, Braves win

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves are coming home after splitting the first two games of their respective NL Division Series.

Jose Urias (oo-REE’-uhs) hit an RBI single and limited the Giants to a run and three hits over five innings of the Dodgers’ 9-2 rout of San Francisco. The Dodgers broke it open in the sixth as Cody Bellinger and AJ Pollock each delivered RBI doubles. Will Smith added a homer leading off the Dodgers’ three-run eighth.

Losing pitcher Kevin Gausman was reached for four runs on four hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.

The Giants managed just six hits after Friday’s 4-0 shutout of LA.

Max Fried (freed) combined with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Braves blanked the Brewers, 3-0. Fried struck out nine while limiting Milwaukee to three hits over six innings.

The Brewers didn’t get a runner in scoring position until Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs) hit a two-out double in the sixth. Fried responded by striking out Eduardo Escobar.

Austin Riley homered and Ozzie Albies had an RBI double for the Braves, who bounced back after losing 2-1 in Game 1.

The NL Division Series resume on Monday.

ALDS off day

UNDATED (AP) — The two AL Division Series are changing venues and will resume on Sunday.

The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays split their first two games. Nathan Eovaldi (eh-VAHL’-dee) will start Game 3 after pitching well in Boston’s wild-card win over the Yankees on Tuesday. Rays manager Kevin Cash will go with Drew Rasmussen.

The Bosox posted a 14-6 rout of the Rays on Friday after absorbing a 5-0 shutout in the series opener.

The Chicago White Sox will look to avoid a three-game sweep when they host the Houston Astros. The southsiders will start Dylan Cease in Game 3 against Rookie of the Year candidate Luis Garcia.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Carlos Rodón (roh-DAHN’) might pitch a potential Game 4 on Monday after being limited down the regular-season stretch because of shoulder soreness and fatigue.

Houston has earned five-run victories in each of the first two games.

Packers place Alexander on IR

UNDATED (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have placed star cornerback Jaire Alexander on injured reserve. The move means Alexander must miss at least the next three games.

Alexander hurt a shoulder in a 27-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Coach Matt LaFleur has said he’s hopeful that Alexander will avoid surgery and could “be back with us in a matter of weeks.” Alexander made the Pro Bowl and earned second-team honors in All-Pro balloting last season.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— The Bills have signed cornerback Taron Johnson to a three-year contract extension through 2024. The deal is for $24 million, with about $14 million guaranteed.

— Browns starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. will not play Sunday against the Chargers due to a nagging ankle injury suffered in the season opener at Kansas City. The Browns also activated starting linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. from injured reserve.

— The 49ers have placed star tight end George Kittle on injured reserve with a calf injury that has been bothering him for weeks. Kittle played through the injury last week but was unable to practice at all this week.

— The Bears have placed running back David Montgomery on injured reserve because of a sprained knee and activated linebacker Danny Trevathan. Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks did not travel with the team and will miss Sunday’s game at Las Vegas.

— The Raiders have placed cornerbacks Trayvon Mullen and backup Damon Arnette on injured reserve, shutting down both for at least three weeks. Backup tight end Derek Carrier is also on the list. All three players got hurt in last week’s loss to the Chargers.

— Chargers cornerback Ryan Smith has been activated from injured reserve. Smith was signed as a free agent from Tampa Bay during the offseason, but missed training camp and the first four weeks of the season due to a core muscle injury.

— Chiefs second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. has posted on social media that he is struggling with his mental health. Gay offered no specifics in the tweet, which was posted soon after Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Gay was excused from practice for “personal reasons.” Gay returned to practice just this week after coming off injured reserve.

Gonzaga coach to miss games after DUI arrest

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Gonzaga coach Mark Few will miss two exhibition games and the first game of the regular season, punishment for his arrest last month on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Few’s first game will be Nov. 13 against Texas, a showdown of expected top-10 teams.

Few has apologized for his “regretful decision.”

Schenk leads by 1 over Wolff

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Adam Shenk will carry a one-stroke lead over Matthew Wolff into the final round of the PGA’s Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.

Schenk is 18 under following a 5-under 66 on Saturday. He birdied three of his final four holes, putting him in better position for his first career PGA win.

Wolff fired a 65 that puts him one ahead of Sam Burns, Chad Ramey and Andrew Putnam.

LPGA-FOUNDERS CUP

WEST CALDWELL, N.J. (AP) — Jin Young Ko is chasing history as well as her third LPGA title of the season.

Ko fired a 2-under 69 to take a four-shot lead at the Founders Cup in New Jersey. Saturday was her 13th consecutive round in the 60s, one off the LPGA record Annika Sorenstam set during a four-tournament stretch in 2005.

U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso shares second at 9 under with Elizabeth Szokol, two-time major champion So Yeon Ryu and Lindsey Weaver.

PGA-TOUR CHAMPIONS

Mickelson rides hot stretch to 2-shot lead on Champions Tour

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Phil Mickelson has a two-shot lead as he tries to win for the third time in four career starts on the PGA Tour Champions.

Mickelson went eagle-birdie-birdie in a three-hole stretch for a 5-under 67.
