NFL-SCHEDULE

Jaguars snap 20-game skid with last-second kick

UNDATED (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have ended their 20-game skid.

Matthew Wright made a 53-yard field goal on the final play of their game in London against the Miami Dolphins to give Jacksonville a 23-20 win, snapping the NFL’s second-longest losing streak ever. Only the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost more consecutive games with 26 to start their franchise in 1976-77.

Wright had tied the game earlier in the fourth quarter with a 54-yard field goal and also hit a 40-yarder in the first quarter. The Jaguars came into the game as the only team in the Super Bowl era without a successful field goal in the first games five games of a season.

The Dolphins lost their fifth consecutive game, spoiling the return of Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’-ah), who made his first start in a month.

It’s been a lopsided Sunday in the NFL. Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Baltimore and the Rams all won their games by at least 23 points. The only time in the past nine seasons when more teams won by at least 23 points on the same day came Dec. 30, 2018, when five teams did it on the final day of that season.

The Bengals beat the Lions 34-11, the Colts beat the Texans 31-3, the Ravens won 34-6 against the Chargers and the Rams beat the Giants 38-11.

In other NFL action:

— Lamar Jackson threw for 167 yards and a touchdown, and the Baltimore Ravens frustrated Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers in a 34-6 victory. A week after scoring 47 points in a win over Cleveland, the Chargers came up empty on their first five possessions. Los Angeles was held under 16 points for only the second time since drafting Herbert before last season. The Ravens completely controlled this matchup of division leaders. Each of Baltimore’s three veteran running backs — Latavius Murray, Le’Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman — scored a touchdown.

— Carson Wentz threw two touchdown passes, Jonathan Taylor ran for another score and the Indianapolis defense protected a big second-half lead to help the Colts put away Houston 31-3. Indy has won two of three since opening the season with three straight losses. The Texans have lost five straight overall and six of the last seven in the series. But they never had a chance after Wentz threw a 28-yard TD pass to Mo Alie-Cox for a 17-3 third-quarter. Taylor made it 24-3 on a 4-yard scoring run.

— Matthew Stafford threw three of his four touchdown passes in a 28-point second quarter and the Los Angeles Rams rolled to a 38-11 victory over the injury-plagued and error-prone New York Giants. Stafford connected with prime target Cooper Kupp on scoring passes of 3 and 13 yards. He also found Robert Woods on a 15-yard pass and running back Darrell Henderson on a 25-yarder. Stafford, who has 16 TD passes, finished 22-of-28 for 251 yards. The Rams took advantage of two short fields provided by their defense and improved to 5-1. The banged-up Giants fell to 1-5.

— Patrick Mahomes threw for 397 yards and engineered three second-half touchdown drives to compensate for a pair of interceptions, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 31-13 comeback victory at Washington that got them back to .500. After throwing two picks before halftime, Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill on a 2-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter and put the game out of reach with a 24-yarder to Demarcus Robinson with 3:14 left in the fourth. In between, new starting running back Darrel Williams rushed for his second TD of the game to help Kansas City (3-3) avoid what would have been an embarrassing loss.

— Joe Burrow tied a career high with three touchdown passes, helping the Cincinnati Bengals rout the Detroit Lions 34-11 Sunday. The Bengals already have four wins to equal last year’s total and to double their victories from 2019 during coach Zac Taylor’s debut season. Detroit is the NFL’s only winless team. The Lions could not rally as they did in closely contested setbacks against San Francisco, Baltimore and Minnesota. They failed to score until Austin Seibert made a 35-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter. Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell says isn’t considering a change at quarterback. But he’s not happy after his team fell to 0-6 with Jared Goff under center.

— Aaron Rodgers threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 24-14 victory over the Chicago Bears. The Packers beat the Bears for the 20th time in 23 games counting the playoffs and improved to 22-5 with Rodgers as the starter against Chicago. They also prevented Chicago from tying them for the NFC North lead. Rodgers shook off a sluggish start, throwing a 1-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard in the second quarter and a 12-yarder to Aaron Jones in the third. Rodgers put the Bears away after Justin Fields threw a 5-yard touchdown to Darnell Mooney as he scored from the 6 to cap a 75-yard drive.

— Kirk Cousins completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Osborn on the first possession of overtime to lift the Minnesota Vikings to a wild 34-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Cousins threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns against the league’s top-ranked pass defense, Dalvin Cook ran for 140 yards and a score and the Minnesota Vikings finally appeared to solve their second-half offensive woes. Adam Thielen had a number of big catches, finishing with 11 receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings had not scored a second-half touchdown in their previous four games, but the Vikings had three offensive scores after halftime.

— Browns star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has returned after going to the locker room in the first half with an apparent right shoulder injury. Beckham returned on the second possession of the second half for Cleveland and quickly caught a 24-yard pass from Baker Mayfield. Beckham got hurt at the end of a 17-yard reception in the second quarter. He was driven to the ground by Arizona cornerback Marco Wilson. Beckham missed most of last season following knee surgery.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-LSU-ORGERON OUT

Reports: LSU, Orgeron to part ways, less than 2 years after title

UNDATED (AP) — LSU and football coach Ed Orgeron (OHR’-zhih-rahn) have agreed to part ways after this season, according to multiple media reports.

The news comes 21 months after Orgeron led the Tigers to a national championship with what is considered one of the greatest teams in college football history. The timing of the decision came as a surprise — the day after the Tigers upset Florida — though the end for Coach O at LSU seemed to be approaching soon after a blowout loss last week to Kentucky.

Orgeron is 49-17 with the Tigers, including 15-0 in 2019 when Joe Burrow won a Heisman Trophy and LSU its third national championship since 2003.

Orgeron replaced Les Miles, who had also won a national title with the Tigers.

T25 COLLEGE FOOTBALL-POLL

Cincinnati up to No. 2; Purdue snaps poll drought

UNDATED (AP) — Cincinnati has moved up to No. 2 behind Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll for the best ranking for a team from outside the traditional power conferences since 2010.

The Bulldogs remained a unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 voting. The Bearcats inched up a spot, taking advantage of Iowa’s loss to Purdue. The Hawkeyes dropped nine places to No. 11, while the Boilermakers moved into the rankings at No. 25. Purdue was last ranked in 2007.

Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by Alabama and Ohio State. Michigan is No. 6, followed by Penn State, Oklahoma State, Michigan State and Oregon.

No. 24 Texas-San Antonio is ranked for the first time in the history of the program.

The Sunshine State Blues are back. Florida fell out of the rankings for the first time this season after the Gators were beaten by LSU on Saturday. That leaves the state of Florida with no ranked teams for the first time since 2011.

NLCS-DODGERS/BRAVES

Scherzer ready for Game 2

ATLANTA (AP) — The Dodgers are ready to start ace Max Scherzer in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series against Atlanta, a day after manager Dave Roberts scratched the veteran right-hander to get him an extra day of rest.

Scherzer got his first career save Thursday by pitching the ninth inning of a 2-1 Game 5 win against San Francisco to close out their NL Division Series. Roberts planned to run him back out for NLCS Game 1 until Scherzer said his arm felt a little tired after a workout Friday. Scherzer expects to be able to give maximum effort Sunday, and he could still be available for another start later in the seven-game series.

Atlanta’s Game 2 starter will be 23-year-old Ian Anderson. He is 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA in five career playoff starts, including five strong innings in a 3-0 Game 3 win over the Brewers in their NL Division Series.

The right-hander faced the Dodgers twice in last year’s NLCS, delivering four scoreless innings to start Game 2 before allowing two runs in three innings in a shakier Game 7 start that Los Angeles went on to win, 4-3.

Going with Anderson allows manager Brian Snitker to get an extra day of rest for veteran Charlie Morton, who is lined up for Game 3.

Third baseman Justin Turner is not in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup because of a stinger on the right side of his neck. Turner, a Dodger stalwart who played in 79 postseason games, initially aggravated his neck in batting practice before Game 1. He went 1-for-4, but manager Dave Roberts said he could tell Turner was bothered during Los Angeles’ 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Turner was available to pinch hit on Sunday, and Roberts said he will mostly likely be back in the lineup for Game 3 in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Chris Taylor was set to start at third base.

ALCS-ASTROS/RED SOX

Series shifts to Boston, giving Houston’s battered pitching staff a rest day

BOSTON (AP) — The Astros’ bruised and battered pitching staff gets a day to recover before their AL Championship Series resumes with Game 3 in Boston on Monday.

The Red Sox evened the series at a game apiece Saturday by becoming the first team in postseason history to hit two grand slams in a game. They hit the slams during the first two innings of a 9-5 win in Houston.

Astros starter Luis Garía was pulled in the second inning with right knee discomfort. That came after he allowed a first-inning grand slam to J.D. Martinez but before reliever Jake Odorizzi (oh-duh-RIH’-zee) allowed another to Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz) in the second.

Houston is also without starter Lance McCullers Jr., who was left off the ALCS roster because of a flexor pronator muscle strain in his right arm. He was feeling better Saturday but still isn’t able to throw.

Game 1 starter Framber Valdez covered just 2 2/3 innings in a 5-4 win, forcing manager Dusty Baker to push the bullpen hard over the first two games of the series.

Jose Urquidy (ur-KWEE’-dee) is lined up to make his first start of the postseason in Game 3. The Red Sox have yet to name their starter.

NBA-76ERS-SIMMONS

Simmons practices with 76ers; status for opener unknown

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Ben Simmons practiced with the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday for the first time this season. Coach Doc Rivers says no decision was made on Simmons’ status for Wednesday’s season opener.

Simmons was a holdout for training camp and the early part of the preseason in the wake of his offseason trade demand. The three-time All-Star guard made a surprise return to the team on Monday.

The Sixers open the season at New Orleans and play their home opener Friday against Brooklyn.

WNBA-FINAL

Chicago wins first WNBA title with 80-74 win over Phoenix

CHICAGO (AP) — Allie Quigley scored 26 points and Candace Parker added 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists to help Chicago win its first WNBA championship with a 80-74 victory over the Phoenix Mercury. Courtney Vandersloot added 10 points and 15 assists for the Sky, who won the series 3-1, rallying from a 72-65 deficit with 4:42 left.

Chicago scored the next nine points to take a two-point lead on Stefanie Dolson’s layup. She then added another basket to make it 76-72 with 45.8 seconds left.

Vandersloot then scored in the lane to seal the victory setting off the celebration. As the final buzzer sounded, Parker sprinted to the corner of the court and hugged her family with tears in her eyes.
