Bulldogs bite Tigers…Spartans fall

UNDATED (AP) — Georgia did little to tarnish its status as the nation’s No. 1 college football team.

Stetson Bennett and JT Daniels shredded Missouri’s defense as the Bulldogs rolled to a 43-6 victory. Bennett passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Daniels. In his first appearance in more than a month, Daniels completed 7 of 11 passes for 82 yards and a TD.

The Bulldogs were impressive in scoring 40 unanswered points after Missouri’s early 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, there are no more unbeaten teams in the Big Ten following Purdue’s 40-29 rout of CFP No. 3 Michigan State. Aidan O’Connell threw for a career-best 536 yards and matched his career high with three scoring strikes.

O’Connell went 40 of 54 in helping the Boilermakers beat a top-3 school for the second time this season.

The Spartans fell to 8-1 despite Kenneth Walker III’s 23 carries for 146 yards and a score.

In Saturday’s other top-25 action:

— Bryce Young and the Alabama defense led a 20-14 victory over heavy underdog LSU. Young was 24 of 37 for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Jameson Williams grabbed a 58-yard scoring pass and had 10 catches for 160 yards to help the CFP No. 2 Crimson Tide preserved their national championship hopes.

— Travis Dye rushed for a career-high 211 yards and a touchdown for CFP No. 4 Oregon in a 26-16 toppling of Washington. The Ducks fell behind early before running off 21 consecutive points in beating the Huskies for the seventh time in their past eight meetings in Seattle.

— C.J. Stroud threw for 405 yards and two touchdowns, but CFP No. 5 Ohio State needed a couple of late stops to preserve a win at Nebraska, 26-17. Stroud completed 36 of 54 passes but threw two interceptions after having gone four straight games without being picked off. The Buckeyes had the nation’s leading offense, but it managed just two field goals in the second half, allowing the Cornhuskers to pull within six points at one point.

— Desmond Ridder threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns as CFP No. 6 Cincinnati got past Tulsa, 28-20. Alec Peirce had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown to help the 9-0 Bearcats extend the nation’s second-longest home winning streak to 24 games. Cincinnati didn’t seal the win until Steven Anderson fumbled as he was reaching for the goal line late in the game, allowing Jabari Taylor to make the recovery for a touchback.

— Hassan Haskins ran for a career-high 168 yards and a touchdown, helping CFP No. 7 Michigan bounce back from its first defeat with a 29-7 trouncing of Indiana. Cade McNamara was 10 of 18 for 168 yards with two touchdown passes to tight end Luke Schoonmaker that helped the Wolverines pull away.

— North Carolina rallied from 18 down in the third quarter to stun CFP No. 9 Wake Forest 58-55. Ty Chandler ran for career highs of 213 yards and four touchdowns, including a 50-yard scoring run with 1:12 left. Sam Howell threw for 216 yards and a touchdown while running for 104 and two more scores for the 5-4 Tar Heels.

— Jack Coan completed 23 of 29 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown as CFP No. 10 Notre Dame thumped Navy, 34-6. Coan tossed a 70-yard scoring pass to Kevin Austin late in the first half. Kyren Williams ran for 95 yards and two TDs on 17 carries, helping the Fighting Irish rack up 430 total yards.

— Spencer Sanders threw two touchdown passes and CFP No. 11 Oklahoma State recording eight sacks in a 24-3 silencing of West Virginia. The Mountaineers were limited to 133 total yards, including 17 yards on the ground against the Big 12′s top rushing defense.

— Chandler Morris threw for 461 yards and two touchdowns in his first start for TCU and the Horned Frogs beat CFP No. 12 Baylor, 30-28. The Horned Frogs snapped a three-game losing streak six days after the school and Gary Patterson mutually agreed to immediately part ways after almost 21 seasons together.

— Micheal Clemons scored the game’s only touchdown on a 24-yard fumble return early in the fourth quarter of CFP No. 14 Texas A&M’s 20-3 victory against No. 13 Auburn. Clemons’ scoop-and-score came after defensive tackle Jayden Peevy poked the ball away from scrambling Auburn quarterback Bo Nix.

— Matt Corral threw for 324 yards and a touchdown to lead CFP No. 16 Mississippi past Liberty and former Rebels coach Hugh Freeze, 27-14. The 7-2 Rebels raced to a 24-0 halftime lead, highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown run by Jerrion Ealy on the game’s second play.

— Frank Harris passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores to lead No. 16 UTSA to a 44-23 victory against UTEP on Saturday night at the Sun Bowl. The Roadrunners pushed their school-record win streak to nine games but don’t appear in the CFP standings despite being one of four undefeated FBS teams.

— Jaren Hall threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half of and CFP No. 15 BYU’s 59-14 dismantling of Idaho State. Puka Nacua had six catches for 120 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars.

— Hendon Hooker threw a career-high four touchdown passes, including a 6-yard insurance score to Cedric Tillman early in the fourth quarter of Tennessee’s 45-42 upset of CFP No. 18 Kentucky. Will Levis (LEH’-vihs) had 372 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Wildcats.

— Tyler Goodson ran for 141 yards and a touchdown as CFP No. 22 Iowa beat Northwestern, 17-12. Alex Padilla came in for an ineffective Spencer Petras (PEE’-trahs) late in the first quarter and completed 18 of 28 passes for 172 yards.

— Clayton Tune was 21 of 26 for 385 yards and three touchdowns in No. 20 Houston’s 54-42 shootout win over South Florida. Ta’Zhawn Henry had 130 yards on 10 carries, much of it on his 97-yard scoring burst.

— Backup Bryce Carpenter threw for 85 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to help 21st-rated Coastal Carolina beat Georgia Southern 28-8.

— Jahan Dotson caught 11 passes for a school-record 242 yards and three touchdowns, helping No. 22 Penn State snap a three-game losing streak with a 31-14 victory over Maryland.

— Seth Henigan threw for 392 yards and two touchdowns while Memphis’ defense stymied No. 23 SMU in a 28-25 victory over the Mustangs.

— Hank Bachmeier passed for 283 yards and a touchdown and Boise State had five sacks and forced three turnovers to smother No. 25 Fresno State, 40-14.

Heat top Jazz

UNDATED (AP) — The Miami Heat won the NBA’s best matchup of the night.

Tyler Herro (HEE’-roh) scored 29 points and Kyle Lowry had his 19th triple-double in the Heat’s 118-115 victory against the Jazz. Miami led by 19 points with 5 minutes remaining but the victory wasn’t assured until Donovan Mitchell missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Lowry finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Jimmy Butler scored 27 points for the Heat, making two free throws with 10.4 seconds remaining after Utah had cut it to 116-115.

Mitchell finished with 37 points.

Checking out Saturday’s other NBA action:

— The 76ers have a six-game winning streak after Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ehm-BEED’) contributed 30 points and 15 rebounds in a 114-105 downing of the Bulls. Furkan Korkmaz (fur-KAHN KOHRK’-mahs) matched his career best with seven 3-pointers and added 25 points for the Sixers.

— The Mavericks pulled out a 107-104 win over the Celtics on a high-arching 3-pointer by Luka Doncic (DAHN’-chihch) at the buzzer. Doncic finished with 33 points and Kristaps Porzingis (KRIHS’-tahps pohr-ZIHN’-gihs) provided 15 of his 21 points in the second half.

— Damian Lillard scored 25 points before sitting out the fourth quarter of the Trail Blazers’ 105-90 pounding of the Lakers. Jusuf Nurkic (YOO’-suhf NUR’-kihch) added 15 points and 17 rebounds for the Blazers, who led by as many as 34 despite playing the second of a back-to-back.

— Devin Booker scored 38 points, Frank Kaminsky added 16 off the bench and the Suns rallied from 12 down in the fourth quarter to beat the Hawks, 121-117. Trae Young led Atlanta with 31 points and 13 assists.

— Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH’-lah YOH’-kihch) blocked Jae’Sean Tate’s drive to the basket as time ran out. securing the Nuggets’ 95-94 victory over the Rockets. Jokic finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds in the absence of forward Michael Porter Jr, who left the game in the first quarter with lower back tightness.

Rodgers loses endorsement deal

UNDATED (AP) — A Wisconsin health care company has ended a nine-year partnership with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

A statement posted on Twitter by Prevea Health said the company and Rodgers mutually agreed to end their partnership. The move comes a day after Rodgers told “The Pat McAfee Show” he had sought alternative treatments to COVID-19 vaccination because he is allergic to an ingredient in two of the FDA-approved shots.

Rodgers did not say what ingredient he was allergic to, or how he knows he is allergic.

In other NFL news:

— A person familiar with the agreement tells The Associated Press the Browns and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have agreed to terms for his release. The person says Beckham has signed off on the settlement and will be waived Monday.

— The Bears will once again be without star linebacker Khalil Mack, though they might have running back David Montgomery available when they visit the Steelers on Monday night. Mack will miss his second consecutive game with a foot injury.

— Browns All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin was placed on injured reserve with a dislocated elbow, which will force him to miss at least three games. Conklin got hurt in the second quarter of last weekend’s 15-10 loss to Pittsburgh.

— The Titans have activated starting linebacker Jayon Brown from injured reserve. Brown had missed the last five games with a knee injury suffered in the Titans’ loss to the Jets.

—Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley will miss at least three games after being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. The move follows Ridley’s announcement last week that he needs “to step away from football at this time and focus on my mental wellbeing.”

Blackhawks axe Colliton

CHICAGO (AP) — The Blackhawks have fired coach Jeremy Colliton (KAH’-lih-tuhn) and two of his assistants following the team’s 1-9-2 start. Colliton was in his fourth season at the helm, and the first season of a two-year contract extension.

Derek King was promoted from Chicago’s AHL affiliate at Rockford to replace Colliton on an interim basis.

Cats beat Canes

UNDATED (AP) — The Florida Panthers have matched the best 11-game start in NHL history while preventing the Carolina Hurricanes from equalizing the league’s best 10-game start.

The Panthers are 10-0-1 after Anthony Duclair delivered two goals and two assists in a 5-2 victory over the Hurricanes. Duclair registered a goal and two assists in the first period to help Florida win without Aleksander Barkov, who was a late scratch with a lower body injury.

Spencer Knight made 28 saves for Florida, which tied the 1994-95 Penguins and 2006-07 Sabres as the only NHL teams to reach 21 points after 11 games.

The Hurricanes were trying to become the NHL’s third team to open a season with 10 consecutive wins.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— The Coyotes finally have their first win of the season after Lawson Crouse scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:05 remaining in a 5-4 verdict over the expansion Kraken. Shayne Gostisbehere (GAHS’-tihs-behr) had three assists as Arizona improved to 1-10-1, avoiding the worst 12-game start in team history.

— Steven Stamkos scored his sixth goal of the season to break a tie midway through the third period of the Lightning’s 5-3 downing of the Senators. Ondrej Palat (AHN’-dray pah-LAHT’) provided the eventual game-winner for the Lightning, who also received goals from Victor Hedman, Jan Rutta (yahn ROO’-tah), and Anthony Cirelli.

— Ilya Sorokin (sah-ROH’-kihn) notched his third shutout of the season by stopping 24 shots in the Islanders’ 2-0 win at Winnipeg. Anders Lee and Brock Nelson did the scoring as New York improved to 5-0-2 in its last seven games.

— Derick Brassard and Sean Couturier (koo-TUR’-ee-ay) provided the Flyers’ scoring in a 2-1 win against the Capitals. Martin Jones stopped 31 shots in helping Philadelphia improve to 6-2-2.

— Auston Matthews and John Tavares had two goals as the Maple Leafs earned their fifth straight win, 5-2 versus the Bruins. Mitch Marner added an empty-netter and had three assists for Toronto.

— Johnny Gaudreau had two goals and an assist in the Flames’ 6-0 rout of the Rangers. Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves for his league-best fourth shutout of the season, helping Calgary improve to 7-0-3 since a season-opening loss.

— Alex Pietrangelo (peh-TRAN’-jeh-loh) and Chandler Stephenson each had a goal and an assist as the Golden Knights topped the Canadiens, 5-2, leaving Montreal 3-10. Jonathan Marchessault (MAHR’-cheh-soh), Dylan Coghlan and Brayden McNabb also scored for Vegas, which was outshot 20-1 and trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes.

— The Wild erased a two-goal deficit in the last five minutes of regulation before Nick Bjugstad (BYOOG’-stad) scored the deciding goal in a shootout to complete Minnesota’s 5-4 triumph over the Penguins. Ryan Hartman tied the game with 1.1 seconds to play in regulation after a net-mouth scramble.

— The Blue Jackets picked up their third win in a row by scoring three times in the last 6 1/2 minutes of a 4-2 downing of the Avalanche. Cole Sillinger broke a 2-2 tie with 1:02 remaining.

— The Red Wings’ four-game skid is over after Moritz Seider scored 3:45 into overtime to give them a 4-3 victory against the Sabres. Tyler Bertuzzi had two goals and two assists, while Rookie Lucas Raymond had three assists.

— The Devils rallied twice before Jesper Bratt provided the lone shootout tally in a 3-2 win at San Jose. Ryan Graves and Janne Kuokkanen tallied in regulation for New Jersey, which had lost three straight.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

Petrovic, Furyk share TimberTech lead

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Tim Petrovic birdied the final two holes for an 11-under 61 and a share of the lead with Jim Furyk after a 36-hole Saturday in the TimberTech Championship at Boca Raton.

Furyk closed with a birdie for a 64 to match Petrovic at 14-under 130 at The Old Course at Broken Sound.

The 55-year-old Petrovic is winless on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

Steven Alker was a stroke back after a 63.
