Titans dominate Chiefs 27-3
UNDATED (AP) — Ryan Tannehill threw for 270 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for a score and the Tennessee Titans routed the Kansas City Chiefs 27-3 Sunday for their fifth win in six games.
This was the second victory in six days for the Titans over teams that played for the AFC championship in January. They edged Buffalo 34-31 on Monday night. They followed that by simply dominating the two-time defending AFC champs as Tennessee jumped out to a 27-0 halftime lead.
The Chiefs now have lost two of three and dropped to 1-4 in the AFC this season.
Elsewhere around the NFL:
— The Cincinnati Bengals won their AFC North showdown against the Baltimore Ravens in style, pulling away in the second half for a 41-17 victory. Joe Burrow threw for a career-high 416 yards and three touchdowns, including an 82-yarder to rookie Ja’Marr Chase in the third quarter. The Bengals drew even with the Ravens atop the division. Former LSU teammates Burrow and Chase were too much for Baltimore to handle, and Cincinnati’s offense moved the ball pretty easily from the middle of the second quarter on. Chase had eight catches for 201 yards, easily the most productive performance of his impressive debut season.
— Aaron Rodgers threw touchdown passes to three receivers and the Green Bay Packers defeated Washington 24-10 for their sixth consecutive victory. Washington outgained Green Bay 430-304 but had five separate scoreless trips inside the Packers’ 30-yard line. That includes back-to-back series that ended inside the 5. Before Sunday, Packers opponents had scored touchdowns every single time they reached the red zone. The Packers haven’t lost since falling 38-3 to New Orleans on the season’s opening Sunday. Washington has lost three straight.
— Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes, Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor ran for two TDs each and the New England Patriots won for the first time at home this season, rolling past the New York Jets 54-13. The Patriots earned their 12th straight victory over the Jets, who played most of the game without rookie quarterback Zach Wilson after he left in the second quarter with a knee injury. Jones finished 24 of 36 for 307 yards and Harris rushed 14 times for 106 yards to lead a Patriots offense that gained a season-high 551 yards. Safety Kyle Dugger and J.C. Jackson added interceptions.
— Daniel Jones threw a 5-yard touchdown pass and made a spectacular one-handed 16-yard catch on the game’s only meaningful touchdown drive in leading the New York Giants to a 25-3 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Jones’ touchdown pass went to Dante Pettis and survived a very long replay review in helping the 2-5 Giants hand 3-4 Carolina its fourth straight loss with star running back Christian McCaffrey sidelined. Jones finished 23 of 33 for 203 yards and had six carries for 30 yards. Graham Gano kicked field goals of 49, 53 and 44 yards. Devontae Booker added a 19-yard TD run late.
— Matt Ryan passed for 336 yards and Younghoe Koo made a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Atlanta Falcons a 30-28 win over the Miami Dolphins. Rookie tight end Kyle Pitts had seven catches for 163 yards for the Falcons. He gained 28 on a sideline route with just under 2 minutes left to get the Falcons into field goal range. Koo’s third field goal of the game saved Atlanta after the Falcons wasted a 13-point fourth-quarter lead. Tua Tagovailoa tag-oh-vay-LOH’-ah threw for 291 yards and a career-high four touchdowns for Miami, which has dropped six straight.
— Jared Goff and the winless Detroit Lions are staying with his old team in his return to Los Angeles. The 2016 No. 1 overall pick threw a screen pass to D’Andre Swift on the first possession, and Swift turned it into a 63-yard touchdown. Goff led a drive to a field goal in the final 1:23 of the first half. The Lions trailed the Rams 17-16 in the third quarter. Matthew Stafford led a long drive in his first chance against his former team, but the Rams settled for a field goal. He later threw a pair of touchdown passes.

Brady 1st to 600 TD passes in regular season
UNDATED (AP) — Tom Brady has become the first to throw 600 touchdown passes in the regular season. The Tampa Bay star reached the milestone with a 9-yard toss to Mike Evans that gave the defending Super Bowl champions a 21-0 lead over Chicago in the final seconds of the first quarter.
It was the second TD of the day for the seven-time champ Brady. The first was a 4-yarder to Chris Godwin.
Elsewhere around the NFL:
— Matthew Stafford has become the 13th NFL quarterback with 300 career touchdown passes on the same day Tom Brady was the first to hit the 600 mark. Stafford reached his milestone with a 2-yard pass to Cooper Kupp in the second quarter against Stafford’s former team, the Detroit Lions. The Lions jumped out to a 13-3 lead, but Stafford had scoring strikes to Van Jefferson and Kupp to put Los Angeles back on top.
— For what appears to be a huge leap forward in innovation for helmet safety, the NFL has awarded a total of $1.55 million split among three companies in its Helmet Challenge. The challenge, launched in 2019, aimed to dramatically accelerate the timeline for the development of a football helmet better than anything currently being worn by NFL players. The NFL expects these innovations to mark a huge improvement about four times greater than typically seen year-over-year in helmet design.

LaMelo Ball had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Hornets, but it was their backups who led them in a dominant final quarter. Cody Martin had eight of his 12 in the final 12 minutes.
Before that, it was another night for Bridges, who had his second 30-point outing in the first three games and finished one point shy of his career high.

Demonstrators support Irving vs vaccine mandate at Nets game
NEW YORK (AP) — Demonstrators supporting Nets guard Kyrie Irving and protesting New York’s vaccine mandate gathered outside Barclays Center before Brooklyn’s home opener. A few dozen people were protesting in the plaza outside the arena. Some were chanting “Let Kyrie play! Let Kyrie play!” and holding signs that said “Stand with Kyrie.”
A small group even broke through barriers and got all the way to the front entrance of the arena.
Irving is not with the Nets because of his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19. A New York mandate requires professional athletes playing for a team in the city be vaccinated in order to play or practice in public venues.

Astros’ Valdez to start Game 1 of World Series vs Braves
HOUSTON (AP) — Framber Valdez will start for the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the World Series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
Manager Dusty Baker announced Sunday that Valdez would get the nod, but said the team has not decided on a starter for Wednesday’s Game 2.
The left-hander will oppose Charlie Morton, who pitched for Houston from 2017-18, getting the win in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series.
Valdez threw eight terrific innings in a 9-1 win in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. In Game 1, he permitted three runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The Astros did not provide much new information on the health of ace Lance McCullers Jr., who was left off the ALCS roster because of a flexor pronator muscle strain in his right arm. McCullers still hasn’t started throwing, but general manager James Click would not rule out his return.

Work stoppage almost certain on Dec. 2
HOUSTON (AP) — Baseball’s ninth work stoppage and first in 26 years appears almost certain to start Dec. 2, freezing the free-agent market and threatening the start of spring training in February.
Negotiations have been taking place since last spring, and each side thinks the other has not made proposals that will lead toward an agreement replacing the five-year contract that expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 1.
The luxury tax system that started with the 2003 season sunsets with the expiration of the labor contract, with the exception of completing accounting and payments for the 2021 tax year. Uncertainty over the 2022 season probably will cause high-spending clubs to delay reaching pricier player agreements.
Free agents can start signing with any team on the sixth day following the World Series, and this year’s group includes Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Max Scherzer, Marcus Semien, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Michael Conforto and Kevin Gausman.

David Pastrnak and Derek Forbort each had a goal and an assist and Jake DeBrusk also scored for Boston. Linus (LEE’-nuhs) Ullmark finished with 23 saves for the Bruins, who held on after the Sharks scored back-to-back goals late in the third period. NHL-VIRUS OUTBREAK-BLACKHAWKS
Kane likely out as Blackhawks try for 1st win of season
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane likely will miss Sunday night’s game against Detroit because of the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.
The Blackhawks announced Sunday morning that forward Ryan Carpenter and defenseman Erik Gustafsson had been removed from COVID-19 protocol. But there was no word on Kane. All three players missed practice Saturday after entering the protocol. Assistant coach Tomas Mitell also remains in the protocol
The COVID-19 protocols for the Blackhawks don’t necessarily mean that Mitell or any of the players tested positive. They could have been deemed a close contact of someone who did.

Alabama jumps OU to No. 3; Penn State falls to 20th
UNDATED (AP) — Alabama inched up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football Sunday behind top-ranked Georgia and No. 2 Cincinnati.
The Bulldogs are a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week and the Bearcats remain second.
The Crimson Tide jumped up a spot past Oklahoma after blowing out Tennessee. The now fourth-ranked Sooners were shut out in the first half against Kansas before scoring 35 in the second half and pulling away late.
No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Michigan both held their spots. Oregon moved up three spots to No. 7. No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 Iowa and No. 10 Mississippi round out the top 10.
In a week with no games matching ranked teams, five ranked teams lost, including two in the top 10. Penn State dropped 13 spots to No. 20 after losing in a record nine overtime periods to Illinois. Oklahoma State fell from No. 8 to 15th after losing at Iowa State.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-OFFICIATING MISTAKE
Ivy League says officiating mistake cost Harvard OT victory
UNDATED (AP) — The Ivy League says officials were wrong to wipe out what would have been a game-winning 2-point play in overtime by Harvard after a replay review awarded Princeton a timeout. Princeton won 18-16 in five overtime periods Saturday.
After Jack Smith hit Kim Wimberly with a pass to convert the 2-point play in the third overtime period, replay officials ordered a review to see if Princeton coach Bob Surace called timeout before the snap. They ruled he did and replayed the down. The Ivy League says officials made a procedural error because a timeout can only be awarded by on-field officials before the ball is snapped. It is not a reviewable situation.

Verstappen wins F1 U.S. Grand prix, extends title chase lead
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Verstappen held off Formula One title rival Lewis Hamilton over the final laps of the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday to win his eighth race of the season and double his lead in the championship standings. Verstappen now leads the seven-time champion by 12 points with five races remaining.
Hamilton was bearing down on Verstappen over the final 18 laps and had cut the lead to less than 1 second. But he couldn’t make the push for a pass at the end. Sergio Perez finished second as Red Bull took two spots on the podium.
PGA-ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP
Masters champion Matsuyama wins by 5 shots in Japan
CHIBA, Japan (AP) — Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama (hih-DEH’-kee maht-soo-YAH’-mah) had three birdies in five holes on the back nine and eagled the 18th for good measure for a five-stroke victory at the PGA Tour’s Zozo Championship.
Matsuyama finished with a 65 and a 15-under total of 265. It was his seventh PGA Tour victory and first in his native Japan.
Americans were tied for second at 10-under: Brendan Steele shot 66 and Cameron Tringale 69. Tringale trailed Matsuyama by two strokes going to the 18th hole but the Japanese player’s eagle and the American’s bogey made it a five-shot cushion.
The PGA Tour’s only stop on the Asia swing has attracted only three of the top 20 players in the world rankings.

Jin Young Ko wins LPGA South Korea, set to move to No 1
BUSAN, South Korea (AP) — Jin Young Ko birdied her first playoff hole with fellow South Korean player Hee Jeong Lim to win the BMW Ladies Championship.
The LPGA Tour said Ko is projected to become world No. 1 with the win, overtaking American Nelly Korda. Ko was No. 1-ranked from July 20, 2019, to June 27, 2021, a streak of 100 consecutive weeks, and was also world No. 1 for 12 weeks in early 2019.
It was Ko’s 11th career LPGA win. Lim led by four strokes going into the final round but Ko’s 8-under 64 moved her to 22-under 266, level with Lim after Lim’s final-round 68.

Winther escapes bathroom, holds on to win Mallorca Open
SANTA PONSA, Spain (AP) — Getting trapped in the bathroom didn’t stop Jeff Winther from winning his first European Tour title at the Mallorca Open. The 33-year-old Dane shot even-par 70 in the final round Sunday to finish 15 under for the tournament on the Mediterranean island’s Santa Ponsa course. Overnight leader Winther not only overcame windy conditions to win the title. He also needed his daughter to help out when he and his wife got locked in the bathroom Sunday morning.
