Big cancellations like Summerfest and Big 10 football, people may have a be itching to return to large crowded events

LA CROSSE, Wis (WKBT) – Just ahead of the Democratic National Convention, UW Health is urging everyone to be cautious of attending large gatherings, even if they are outdoors.

Along with other big cancellations like Summerfest and Big 10 football, people may have a be itching to return to large crowded events.

Large gatherings, even when held outside, still make it difficult for health officials to contain the coronavirus.

Experts want to remind the public that the larger and more compact the gathering, the higher the risk of spreading or becoming infected with COVID-19.

“There are two reasons Covid-19 transmits the way it does. And those two factors are the intensity of the exposure, how close you are to someone, and the duration of exposure, how long you are together with them. And for this to be interrupted we have to minimize both those things,” said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control at UW Health.

Health officials also say that this is an important step toward ending the pandemic and allow us to resume many of the events we have traditionally enjoyed.
