Ace cricketer and former Indian captain Virat Kohli is the latest one to speak about his struggles with mental health throughout his career.

New Delhi: Celebrities and sportspersons face the spotlight all their lives and are constantly judged, bickered over, and called out for everything they do.

The pressure of performing, looking good, and behaving a certain way is expected of them, which takes a toll on their mental health and well-being.
Ace cricketer and former Indian captain Virat Kohli is the latest one to speak about struggles he faced with mental health throughout his career.
The 33-year-old has built a reputation for aggression and superb batting, leading his team to new heights during his time as the captain. But the man dubbed “King” Kohli by media and fans, has been plagued by a run of poor form and has been relieved of his captaincy of all formats since late last year after a dismal showing at the Twenty20 World Cup.

Kohli said that pressure to perform has taken a toll on his mental health. “I have experienced times when even in a room full of people who support and love me, I felt alone, and I am sure that this is a feeling that a lot of people can relate to,” he said in an interview. “It is a serious issue and as much as we try to be strong at all times, it can tear you apart.”

Kohli, one of the world’s highest-paid athletes, has not scored a century in any format since 2019.

Performance pressure takes a toll on mental health

SportStars are vulnerable to mental health disorders as a result of the various specific stressors they experience in their sporting environment. Judged for their inconsistent performance and pressure of repeating the same feat can take a toll on their mental health.

Key factors for dismal performance can be

  • Impact of an injury
  • Overtraining
  • Social media scrutiny
  • Competitive pressure to perform.

Why don’t sportspeople speak openly about mental health issues?

It is only in recent times that some sportspersons have openly started talking about mental health issues. Mostly, athletes tend to not seek support or help for mental health problems for various reasons such as:

  • Stigma
  • Influence of mental health on performance
  • Perception of being shown as weak
  • Fear of being excluded from the team
  • Fear of not being allowed to perform

Even though across the world various sporting bodies are now following various guidelines to distribute sport-related health finds to prevent, identify and intervene in mental health cases of athletes, there is still a long way to go.
