Help will soon be on the way for thousands of Nashua students who are struggling academically.>> Download the free WMUR appA new tutoring program being implemented this fall is intended to address problems with remote learning, including technology assistance.>> How to help: Donate to Learn United programThe Learn United initiative, which is expected to start in the middle of October, is a collaboration of civic groups, along with the Nashua School District and teachers union.”We’re building a very large version of a homework club,” said Mike Apfelberg, president of the United Way of Greater Nashua.An effort is underway now to recruit volunteer tutors who will be able to help students who are struggling.”We’re putting out the call to all of the retired teachers in the community,” Apfelberg said. “That’s probably the most likely place where we’re going to find a deep bench of people interested in stepping up.”School officials estimated that as many as half the students in grades one through 11, or as many as 5,000 students, could need help. The tutoring will be done either in-person at one of the many organizations that currently provide youth services or remotely and tailored to the family’s schedule.”If it needs to be at 7 o’clock at night, our tutors will do that,” Apfelberg said. “We’re trying very hard to build something that’s extremely flexible to meet our families’ needs.”The effort includes starting up a technology pantry, refurbishing old laptops and tablets for those in need. Apfelberg cited one family as an example.”They have three siblings in grades six, seven and eight that are sharing one Chromebook, and they can’t do their homework because they’re competing at the exact same time for the exact same device,” he said.Organizers said they are looking for old tablets and laptops in any condition. Technology volunteers will make them serviceable.
