The town will have a quieter week than usual with the absence of home events, but there will be plenty of action throughout for Tarleton Athletics, with four sports hitting the road and both basketball programs beginning practice in the coming days.

The women’s golf team kicks things off Monday in Huntsville for a two-day tournament. Tarleton volleyball will begin conference play on Thursday at Sam Houston, followed by a bout with the Lumberjacks in Nacogdoches. Texan football will be out of state for the first time this season, as the team heads to Richmond to take on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Saturday. Finally, tennis will be back in action this weekend for a two-day tournament, hosted by Texas State.

WOMEN’S GOLF will play their second tournament of the 2021-22 season on Monday-Tuesday, with three rounds at Elkins Lake Country Club for the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational. The Texans are sending Sofia Rodriguez, Angela Inocian, Beatrice Grise, Mathilde Brogens and Bridgett Joeris to compete. Rodriguez led Tarleton in the first tournament two weeks ago at +22, carding 77-78-80. She has carded under 80 now nine times out of her last 12 rounds in the last four tournaments. Freshmen Brogens (+25, 82-80-76), Inocian (+29, 80-86-76), and Joeris (+31, 78-85-81) also competed in the Texans’ first tournament. Grise will be making her season tournament debut.

TEXAN VOLLEYBALL has two matches this week as the program begins conference play. The team will head to Sam Houston on Thursday to take on the Bearkats in Huntsville at 6:30 p.m. CT, and then will play Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT. The Texans are coming off of a near perfect week, taking six of their seven sets played, winning both road matches against Incarnate Word and Texas Southern. Tarleton moved back to .500 on the year (7-7) with a dominating performance, sweeping the Tigers 25-10, 25-12 and 25-19. The win was Tarleton’s third straight victory and second sweep of the season. Against Incarnate Word, Kayla Brannon became the third player in program history to record 2,500 career assists, and the second with 2,500 assists to play alongside a hitter with 1,000 kills. Brannon and 1,000-kill teammates Lauren Kersey and Amber Strange joined Danielle Barker and Stacie Murrah atop the Texan record books. The Bearkats are 7-5 this season, and the Lumberjacks sit at 10-3.

TEXAN FOOTBALL got back to .500 on Saturday with a comfortable 40-21 win at Memorial Stadium over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys. At 2-2, the Texans will play their first out of state game on Saturday with a bout in Richmond against Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels are also 2-2 this year. The 2 p.m. CT contest at Roy Kidd Stadium will be the first between the two teams in series history. Daniel Wright Jr. powered the Texans in their win against the Cowboys with 142 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, averaging 9.5 yards per rush. Greg Eggleston Jr. was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday following his two-interception game against the Cowboys.

TARLETON TENNIS will get back in action this weekend at the Texas State Play Day in San Marcos. Saturday-Sunday will be the Texans’ second tournament of the season after a three-week break. Seven Texans participated in the first tournament, led by Elsa Boisson and Faustine Palatte. The pair made a run to the title match in doubles in Flight 2 after going 2-0 with wins at 8-3 and 8-7(6). They also had strong performances in singles competition, with Boisson winning the Flight 2 West region with a 6-4, 7-5 match victory and a nail-biting 4-6, 6-4 [10-8] win. Palatte placed second in one of the two main flights with a 3-1 record, sweeping her three match wins at 6-2 7-5, 6-2 6-3, and 6-2 6-1. Sophomore Rose Watanabe split her singles matches in one of the main flights 2-2, finishing third in her group with wins of 6-4 6-2 and 6-2 6-3. Deniza Marcinkevica, Natalia Komar, Celia Vaudiau and Anna Davidson also competed in the first tournament.

BOTH BASKETBALL programs will begin their 2021-22 seasons this week with their first practices of the year. Men’s basketball head coach Billy Gillispie is entering his second season at Tarleton and 15th year as a collegiate head coach. The Texans finished 10-10 in his first year amidst a COVID-19 pandemic affected season, with 13 games either postponed or canceled. Tarleton ended the year on a three-game winning streak with wins over New Mexico State and UTRGV. On the women’s side, Misty Wilson is entering her eighth season at the helm for the Texans. She sports a 122-80 record overall as a head coach at Tarleton.
