One Quarter of the Nation: Immigration and the Transformation of America by sociologist Nancy Foner tells the story from the opposite aspect, of how latest immigrants have actually modified the face of America. They have reworked racial perceptions, modified character of the financial system, politics, cities and fashionable tradition. 2020 marked a demographic milestone: there have been 45 million immigrants in US, and along with their households, they made up 26% of the nation’s inhabitants.

The racial make-up of America modified inside a few generations, starting within the Nineteen Sixties, when immigration norms have been relaxed. As of 2018, whites are 60%, Hispanics 18%, Asians 6%. While the share of blacks is 13%, virtually a tenth of these are newcomers from Africa and Caribbean. Group-status risk amongst many whites who concern slipping of their privilege and dominance is driving a conservative backlash in politics.
