BOISE, Idaho — Why did 2,500 sheep cross the highway? Because the grass was greener on the opposite aspect.

In Idaho, it is common to see ranchers transferring a bleating herd of sheep as much as increased elevation at the moment of 12 months. But the sight of two,500 wooly beasts trotting throughout a freeway earlier this week introduced a crowd about 300 folks.

It was the most important turnout that Steve Stuebner, spokesperson for the Idaho Rangeland Resources Commission, has seen in 15 years.

“It’s a novelty. Maybe they’ve never seen anything like that before, but it’s real typical in Idaho,” he instructed KTVB-TV. “When you’re out in rural parts of Idaho in the spring and summer, or fall, you could run into a cattle drive or a sheep drive.”

Curious onlookers lined the highway because the animals sheepishly entered the freeway, guided by ranchers and steered by sheepdogs. They traveled up the highway somewhat methods, the fluffy white herd obscuring the yellow-painted centerline amid a refrain of “baas” and the lead ewe’s jangling bell.

Leaving the open highway behind, they are going to journey by way of the sagebrush-dotted foothills for just a few weeks to their summer time dwelling within the Boise National Forest.

This journey as much as increased elevations is a convention relationship again round 100 years, the Boise-area TV station reported, and having the sheep graze within the forest helps stop fires and invigorates plant progress.
