Wheeling Park High School has its first positive COVID-19 test in a student.

School principal Meredith Dailer posted a note on the high school’s Schoology platform late Saturday notifying of the positive test. A call also was sent out to parents.

“A single positive COVID-19 case has been identified at Wheeling Park High School. The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department notified the Ohio County Board of Education that a student tested positive on Oct. 1, 2020. The health department and school officials have investigated and identified the students and staff that were direct contacts. Those individuals were contacted and placed in quarantine,” Dailer wrote.

The school is being disinfected, Dailer added.

Wheeling Park, like other Ohio County Schools, currently is operating under a level 1 protocol. That means students are in school four days each week — Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Wednesday being a cleaning day.

Meanwhile, the new state map came out Saturday evening, with only three counties in the orange — Harrison, Upshur and Boone — and none in the red. Nearly all the state is in the green.

Kanawha County students will have their first opportunity for school and sports this week, as the county is now in the gold. Students can attend classes in-person and sports is permissible — but only against teams that also are in gold counties. This could lead to some interesting inter-county matchups this coming weekend in Kanawha County.
