The Oklahoma Sooners had the weekend off to kick back, rest up and watch the rest of the college football world.
OU stood pat in both the AP and USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches polls at No. 4.
USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg moved the Sooners up one spot to No. 4 in his weekly NCAA re-rank.
Oklahoma is still behind Georgia, Cincinnati, and Alabama in Myerberg’s rankings. Of note for the Sooners, Oklahoma State was one of Myerberg’s big movers. The Cowboys jumped up four spots to No. 7 in Myerberg’s re-rank.
With Bedlam approaching and Oklahoma in search of impressive wins to add to its portfolio, the Cowboys’ 24-3 defensive clubbing of West Virginia was a helper.
Baylor dropped seven spots in Myerberg’s re-rank to No. 19 after losing at TCU 30-28. Iowa State and Kansas State are within shouting distance of Myerberg’s top-25 with the Cyclones at No. 32 and the Wildcats at No. 36.
After a weekend that saw both Michigan State and Wake Forest handed their first losses of the season, where Oklahoma sits in the second edition of the College Football Playoff rankings tomorrow night is really anybody’s guess.
Oklahoma was already one spot in front of Wake Forest last week when the Sooners checked in at No. 8 in the initial CFP rankings, so there’s no ground to be gained there.
But, Michigan State was No. 3 in the initial CFP rankings, so it will be interesting to see how the committee handles the Spartans with its first loss coming from an unranked Purdue team.
Could Oklahoma jump Cincinnati after the Bearcats struggled against Tulsa?
Joe Vitale of UGA Wire thinks so. He placed the Sooners at No. 5 in his prediction for tomorrow night’s second CFP rankings.
CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson also had Oklahoma moving in front of Cincinnati in his latest rankings.
Our voters moved Cincinnati from No. 3 to No. 2 following Iowa’s loss to Penn State in October, and the Bearcats spent the next three weeks defending that position as the Crimson Tide slowly closed the gap. The narrow wins over AAC foes for Cincinnati finally had their cumulative effect as it dropped back to No. 3 just last week. Now a near-upset at the hands of Tulsa has led to a second straight week of falling in the rankings after a win. The Bearcats dropped two more spots to No. 5, seeing both Oklahoma and Ohio State each move up to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, despite the Sooners being idle in Week 10 and the Buckeyes narrowly escaping Nebraska. – Patterson, CBS Sports
It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. The most important thing for Oklahoma remains winning. Wherever Baylor, Iowa State and Oklahoma State land in tomorrow’s second CFP rankings, the opportunity to enhance the Sooners’ resumé still exists in the regular season’s final three weeks.
