At least one in five sports fans indulge in marijuana from time to time, a new survey says, with fans of the UFC and esports the most likely to light up.
The poll of 1,269 U.S. fans by Morning Consult found more than a third of supporters of those two groups (35 per cent) led the way in marijuana use with around 30 per cent from both groups also occasionally consuming CBD products, according to Marijuana Moment.
Of the four major sporting leagues, NBA fans were most likely to be occasional potheads (25 per cent), followed by NHL fans (23 per cent), NFL fans (22 per cent) and MLB fans, who came in last on the list, (20 per cent).
The poll comes as many leagues are in the process of altering or re-examining their drug policies to be more permissive of cannabis use. The state-led legalization of the drug in the U.S. has led to a patchwork system of regulation that has proven to be a challenge for fans and athletes alike, something that won’t last forever, according to the pollsters.
“Despite marijuana being legal in 11 states, its classification as an illegal Schedule I drug by the United States government is a non-starter for the leagues,” Morning Consult said. “While some properties might be reluctant to associate with marijuana regardless of its legal status, the quick rush of leagues and teams to do business with betting companies following the Supreme Court’s 2018 reversal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act showed how quickly taboos can change.”
The PGA is one of just two leagues currently allowing athletes to sponsor CBD products, Morning Consult said, although its fans were among the least likely to try such products, with just 19 per cent reporting regular use. None of the leagues currently allow their athletes to promote marijuana products.
