MILL HALL — The Central Mountain girls tennis team moved away from its traditional lineup in its match against Mifflinburg on Wednesday and still earned the 5-0 victory to move to 11-1 on the season.

With the District 6 singles district tournament today in Altoona, coach Peter Wert found a good time to both rest some athletes and give some younger players experience.

The Wildcats’ lineup did not look the same as it did prior to Wednesday’s match as No. 1 Carolina Carpenetti and and No. 2 Olivia Anastos rested for their respective district singles matches.

Wert knows districts will be good competition for his team.

“Districts is tough for us. We run into some different teams,” he said. “We’re looking forward to competing and hopefully win a match or two.”

Coming off a 5-0 win over Williamsport and completing a season sweep of the Millionaires, the Wildcats returned home to face a winless Mifflinburg team on a sunny day, in front of about 40 fans.

Kati Kwiatek, the team’s normal No. 3 singles player played as the team’s No. 1 during the match and was victorious, 6-2, 6-1 over Rockell Keister.

At No.2 singles Central Mountain’s Claire Long, who usually plays doubles, defeated Mifflinburg’s Kylie Vasbinder, 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out singles for Central Mountain at No. 3 was Zeta Blesh. Blesh made it a clean sweep in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

In doubles competition, Ellie Gundy, and Bree Weaver won 6-4, 6-0, for Central Mountain at No. 1. The Gundy/Weaver combo took down Kooper Haines and Kisa Elliott.

In the second doubles match, Central Mountain sent out Jaelynn Tripp and Catie Lugg to compete against Mifflinburg’s Kassidy Reedy and Alexis Scopelliti. Tripp and Lugg won, 7-6, 6-1.

Wert was most impressed with his team’s ability to step into new scenarios, he said after Wednesday’s match. The goal was to get some younger players prepped for next year.

“Hope it gets their jitters out and gets them used to what it feels like to play, next year,” Wert said. “They are gonna have the exact same pressure.”

Up next on the schedule for Central Mountain is an away match Monday, Sept. 28 on the road against Milton.
