They won’t feature their traditional start times, but there indeed will be high school hockey, basketball, gymnastics, skiing and wrestling this winter.
The MSHSL Board of Directors approved a plan Thursday to hold each of the winter seasons, albeit with 30 percent fewer contests and later start dates.
Boys basketball and hockey will start Nov. 23, gymnastics will start Dec. 7, and the other sports are all slated to start Nov. 30. Many girls sports were pushed back so as to not overlap with this year’s late-finishing volleyball season. Volleyball won’t finish its season until mid-December this season, more than a month later than most years.
Two games will be allotted per week for winter sports teams, with the exception of the final two weeks of the regular season, when teams can play a third game to play any games previously postponed because of COVID-19.
The board also approved a postseason plan for fall sports that will feature section playoffs, but no state tournaments beyond that.
