HARRISBURG — On Tuesday, Gov. Tom Wolf announced that his administration will allow for slightly increased capacity at indoor and outdoor events, effective 12:01 a.m. Friday.

Indoor events at venues with a capacity of 2,000 or fewer people may host up to 20% of maximum occupancy; venues with a capacity of 2,001 to 10,000 people may host up to 15% of maximum occupancy; and venues with a capacity of more than 10,000 people may host up to 10% of maximum occupancy, up to 3,750 people.

Outdoor events at venues with with a capacity of 2,000 or fewer people may host up to 25% of maximum occupancy; venues with a capacity of 2,001 to 10,000 people may host up to 20% of maximum occupancy; and venues with a capacity of more than 10,000 people may host up to 15% of maximum occupancy, up to 7,500 people.

The maximum occupancy number is defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code. When no fire code capacity is published or available for outdoor events or gatherings venues, the Wolf administration says to establish occupancy as 67 people per 1000 square feet and then apply the maximum occupancy calculator.

The crowd size must include any participants, such as athletes, coaches, officials, staff and members of the news media.

This primarily would affect sporting events and concerts, including events at local high schools. Under the previous order, only 25 or fewer people could gather at any indoor event and only 250 or fewer people could be at an outdoor event.
