The doctor is one of more than 951 healthcare workers who have been infected with the virus since the pandemic began.

As of late Thursday, there were 549 healthcare workers with active coronavirus infections and hundreds more who have been sidelined due to potential exposure to the virus.

The Australian Medical Association’s Victorian president Julian Rait said the association had been informed that an early career doctor was in intensive care after presumed exposure to COVID-19 in their workplace.

“There are naturally many distressed doctors-in-training who are aware of a number of their peers who are unwell after probably contracting coronavirus in their workplace,” Professor Rait said in a statement.

“AMA Victoria are here to support such staff at this difficult time, as we have been for all healthcare workers during this pandemic in pushing for greater PPE, enforcing rights around safe workloads and rostering, while advocating for additional support for their mental health and wellbeing.”
