HOLLAND — After winning its first regular-season conference title in school history, the Zeeland West boys tennis team took the next step.
The Dux won the OK Green Conference tournament on Saturday to claim the outright conference championship, also the first in school history.
Zeeland West scored 48 points on Saturday to win the conference tournament, just ahead of Holland and Mona Shores, which each finished with 44 points to tie for second. Zeeland East had 40.
In the overall standings for the year, the Dux finished first, followed by Holland, Mona Shores and Zeeland East.
“The biggest thing for us is getting that first hurdle out of the way. We knew it would be up for grabs. It really came down to the last couple of matches,” Zeeland West coach Lance McKinney said. “We have been working hard on being able to close out matches. Coming in with those expectations and exceeding them was a lot of validation for the guys.
“Just like our regular season, everybody contributed. Everyone won a match and we only won by four points.”
Zeeland West’s Nathan Kollen-Toby Reinardy won the No. 1 doubles flight title, topping Zeeland East’s Keenan Faber-Drew Wyckoff 6-1, 6-7(1), 6-2 in the final.
The Dux earned another flight title at No. 2 as Grant Bush-Simon Moore topped Zeeland East’s Sam Mulder-Ethan Wilmot 6-4, 6-1 in the final.
Zeeland West won at No. 3 as Luke Henry-Owen Quillan defeated Mona Shores 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
“We leaned heavily on our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. We needed them to show up and win, and they did,” McKinney said. “The big upset we had was our three doubles team was seeded fourth and ended up winning. That was huge.”
Holland’s Cristian Castro-Gonzalez finished as the conference champion at No. 3 singles, topping Drew Schippers of Zeeland West, 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
Zeeland East earned a flight title at No. 4 doubles as Corbin Cnossen-Dominic Schuitema defeated Holland’s Alex Marko-Micah Babinski 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
Zeeland West’s Ethan Haskill was a flight runner-up at No. 4 singles.
Holland’s other flight runner-ups were Neil VanFaasen (No. 1 singles) and Sean Ruhf (No. 2 singles).
“I’m very pleased with the effort from my team today,” said Holland coach Kyle Kreps. “We had a few flights finish higher than their seeds and all flights battled throughout the day.”
