LUCKNOW: In a bid to attract and consolidate women power towards the grand old party, the UP Congress will be giving 40% of its tickets to women in the 2022 Vidhan Sabha elections.
In-charge UP and party national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made an official announcement in this regard on Tuesday here at the UP Congress headquarters. She also said that had just her will prevailed, she would have reserved half the tickets for women.
Inviting women to apply for different seats till November 15, Priyanka also said that that selection of women candidates will be based purely on merit. “We at Congress Party have pledged to give 40% of all tickets to women candidates in 2022 Vidhan Sabha election,” Priyanka said announcing the decision.
On the rationale behind the step, she said: “This decision is for every single woman in UP who wants change, believes in unity and stands for justice… who struggles to give a better life to her family and her state.” She also listed the names of women who intrigued and inspired her to take this decision. The list included rape survivors, kin of victims, young girls who want actual development.
Asserting that subsequent governments have failed to do much for women, she told women, “women have to rise up and join hands if you want real change…. No one is going to change your fate. You will have to get up and take charge. Everyone keeps making promises of providing a safe environment for women but when time comes to deliver, they end up saving the ones who trample you.”
Priyanka also said that the government has become synonymous with someone who can and who is crushing the innocents. Stating that prevailing circumstances were wrong and unjust, she said: “Women can change this norm… because they are harbingers of change. They are sensitive, firm, ready to serve, and take care of everyone around them. I urge women to shun their differences and join hands with the Congress Party and change the course of the nation for the better.”
Later responding to a question on why the UP Congress chose 40% reservation for women, she said: “Had things been totally as per my will, it would have been 50%…. but this may happen in subsequent elections.”
Prompted to comment on whether Congress ruled states will also follow the same model, she said: “I am the in-charge for UP and we have taken the decision for Uttar Pradesh which is known to herald many changes. The model is worth emulating.” The congress party also ran several hashtags and creatives to pump up the campaign.
