MOREH, India — Zomawi, who hails from a Myanmar Mizo village only a few kilometers from the Indian border, says she fled in December when her village was burned down. Now the mom of two is likely one of the many huddled alongside the border looking for refuge from Myanmar’s raging civil conflict.

To make ends meet, she sells necessities alongside a highway to India. From her ramshackle store, she will see a brand new boundary trench dug by the Indian authorities. The trench winds alongside the periphery of the border and is a reminder of how the realm’s residents are caught between two wars.
