Elon University Athletics will be inducting the 50th and 51st classes of the Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 6 during Hall of Fame Weekend. The Elon football team will host Villanova at 2:00 p.m. that day in CAA Football action. The induction ceremony, which is free to attend, will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Schar Center.

Elon will induct six members into the Sports Hall of Fame, three from the 2020 class and three more from the 2021 class. They include Veronica Day ’11, Aaron Mellette ’13 and Chris Thomas ’13 from 2020 and Matt Garner ’04, Danielle Mills ’09 and Tomeka Watson ’13 from 2021.

Leading up to Nov. 6, we will highlight each of the inductees. Today we profile Aaron Mellette.

Mellette concluded his highly-decorated career ranking in the top three of the Southern Conference in career yards (4,254), career receptions (304), and career receiving touchdowns (44) while holding the league’s record for most consecutive games with 100 or more receiving yards at seven.

The Sanford, N.C., native also ranks third all-time in the SoCon in passes caught in a game with 18 in 2010 and has the third-most receptions all-time in a SoCon single season with 113 in 2011.

Mellette helped the Phoenix earned its first-ever FCS playoff berth in 2009 while leading Elon to a No. 9 ranking at the end of the season. Individually, Mellette was a three-time All-American and finished fifth overall for the Walter Payton Award in 2011 and eighth in 2012.

“To be inducted into Elon’s Athletic Hall of Fame is truly humbling and surreal,” Mellette said. “As a freshman in the fall of 2008, I only dreamed of this achievement ever happening. My family, the coaches, and Elon administration that believed in me during my time here as a Phoenix all played a significant role in my life to put me in a position to be successful. I’ll be forever grateful for Elon Athletics, being able to represent the Maroon & Gold on and off the field, and lastly the opportunities that came along with being a student athlete. Merle-Nation will forever reside at Elon!”

Mellette was also named to the SoCon first team three times in his career. He received National Player of the Week accolades from the Sports Network, the College Sports Journal and the College Football Awards. He was named the Elon Male Basnight winner in 2011 and was later selected in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens.
