Following the confirmation of a fall sports season on July 29, the ACC announced Friday that fall Olympic sports will return to play starting Sept. 10.
Cross country will return to action Sept. 11 for a seven-week season lasting until Oct. 24 with men’s and women’s teams from all 15 ACC-member schools participating. The season will culminate in the ACC Championships on Oct. 30 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Including the ACC Championships, Virginia will have four meets this fall, hosting two at Panorama Farms in Albemarle County — including its first meet, the Virginia Invite, on Sept. 25.
Field hockey returns to the pitch Sept. 18 for a seven-week season with all seven ACC teams playing a six-game conference schedule before heading to a single-elimination ACC tournament hosted by Duke Nov. 5, 6 and 8. Along with its six-game conference schedule, Virginia will play four non-conference games against ACC schools. The Cavaliers start their 10-game schedule on Sept. 26 against Wake Forest.
Men’s soccer will kick off the 2020 season Sept. 10, with the 11 teams playing six in-conference games — three home and three away. The teams will be split into North and South Regions, with defending ACC champion Virginia playing in the North Region with Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Virginia Tech. Teams in the North Region will play each region opponent once along with one region opponent twice while teams in the South Region will play each region opponent once along with two region opponents twice. The top four teams from each region will then head to the ACC tournament Nov. 15. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played at the four North Carolina ACC member schools and the final will be hosted by WakeMed Soccer Park. Along with a six-game slate that includes two games against Virginia Tech, Virginia will face Clemson and Syracuse in exhibition matches. Virginia plays its first game Sept. 11 against Clemson.
Women’s soccer will begin play on Sept. 10 with eight conference games. Teams will only be allowed to fly for a maximum of two weekends, with each school having at least one flight. The ACC Tournament will feature the top eight teams in the conference playing in a single-elimination tournament starting Nov. 10 at WakeMed Soccer Park. Virginia will play an 11-game regular season schedule that includes three non-conference games against ACC schools, beginning with a home game against Virginia Tech Sept. 12
Volleyball will start play on Sept. 25, playing eight conference games over a five-week span. The conference’s 15 teams will be split between three regions, with Virginia accompanied by Duke, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech in its region. All teams will play each team in their respective region twice. Virginia will play its eight-game schedule from Oct. 2 to Oct. 25, ringing in the new season against Duke Oct. 2.
Of note, spectators will not be allowed to attend sporting events on Grounds with the exception of families of student-athletes and coaching staff. This applies to all fall Olympic sports and football.
