Punjab CM Amarinder Singh tests negative for COVID-19

  • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tested negative for COVID-19 on Wednesday, a day after one of his cabinet colleagues contracted the infection.
  • Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday.
  • Singh urged all ministers, department secretaries and legislators to get themselves tested for COVID-19. He himself got tested and the result was negative, a spokesperson said.

India has played significant role in combating pandemic: EU

  • The European Union on Wednesday said India has played a significant role in the fight against COVID-19, saying it had also contributed to international efforts to combat the pandemic.
  • The views were expressed at the 15th India-EU virtual summit by European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday.
  • “I would like to thank India for the cooperation your country has shown with the EU. I would like to pay tribute to your role nationally and internationally, multilaterally in combating COVID19 pandemic,” Michel said.

UN warns of dangerous drop in vaccinations during pandemic

  • Levels of childhood immunisations against dangerous diseases such as measles, tetanus and diphtheria have dropped alarmingly during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting millions of children at risk, United Nations agencies said on Wednesday.
  • “The avoidable suffering and death caused by children missing out on routine immunisations could be far greater than COVID-19 itself,” World Health Organization (WHO) director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a joint report with UNICEF.
  • Three-quarters of the 82 countries that responded to a survey for the report said they had suffered coronavirus-related disruptions to their immunisation programmes as of May 2020.

Air India to send certain employees on leave without pay for up to five years

  • Air India has started the process of identifying employees, based on various factors like efficiency, health and redundancy, who will be sent on compulsory leave without pay (LWP) for up to five years, according to an official order.
  • The airline’s board of directors have authorised its Chairman and Managing Director Rajiv Bansal to send employees on LWP “for six months or for a period of two years extendable upto five years, depending upon the following factors – suitability, efficiency, competence, quality of performance, health of the employee, instance of non-availability of the employee for duty in the past as a result of ill health or otherwise and redundancy”, the order said on Tuesday.

Maruti, Toyota recall over 1.41 lakh units to replace faulty fuel pumps

  • The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Wednesday said it is recalling 1,34, 885 units of WagonR and Baleno to in order to replace faulty fuel pumps.
  • Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), which sources Baleno from MSI and sells it as Glanza, also said it is recalling around 6,500 units of the premium hatchback to fix the same problem.
  • In a statement, MSI said it is voluntarily recalling WagonR (1-litre) manufactured between November 15, 2018, and October 15, 2019, and Baleno (petrol) manufactured between January 8, 2019, and November 4, 2019.
