On August 15, 1947, at the crack of dawn, our country kickstarted a whole new journey as the ‘Independent India’. But with freedom came uncertainty and hurdles like lack of resources and internal turmoil, which had the potential to prevent the nation from progressing.
Despite these struggles, the freshly formed independent India continued to grow on all fronts. And in the 1960s, it kickstarted its own space programme, led by two extremely audacious scientists, Dr Homi Bhabha and Dr Vikram Sarabhai.
From the first rocket launch in 1963 and the formation of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on August 15, 1969, to the several successful space missions that the nation has accomplished to date, India has indeed come a long way. And over the years, space agencies from across the globe have also acknowledged these efforts!
Now, with India about to complete 75 years of independence on August 15, 2022, congratulatory messages from world leaders and celebrities have begun pouring from across the globe. Amid these pre-celebrations, or as we say, ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, ISRO has also received some ‘out-of-this-world’ compliments.
Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti from the International Space Station, on behalf of NASA and ESA, has sent a video congratulating India on the historic moment.
Along with the congratulatory messages, she also spoke about the upcoming NISAR Earth Science Mission. This ISRO-NASA collaboration project aims to predict global disasters and study climate change by detecting Earth’s surface motions and understanding the processes occurring deep within.
Further, she wished ISRO luck for the Gaganyaan mission that plans to carry humans to space. Currently, India is in the final stages of testing the human spaceflight mission parameters.
