The death toll from the collapse of a decade-old five-storey building in a town of Maharashtra’s Raigad district rose to 11 on Tuesday, officials said, as rescue operations continued to remove those trapped in the rubble.

The bodies of six men and five women have been pulled by rescuers, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), so far from the accident site in the Kajalpura area of Mahad town, around 170 kilometres from Mumbai. Earlier in the day, a four-year-old child was rescued from the debris after the accident on Monday evening.

“As per official status from collector’s office, 17 more may be feared trapped,” Alok Kumar, NDRF officer, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI earlier.

Officials said Mohammad Bangi, the rescued child, was rushed to a nearby hospital and that he has suffered minor injuries. His aunt, Rupasa, said the boy was trapped under the debris along with his two sisters and mother. “His three family members are still trapped under the rubble. I pray for everyone’s survival,” she said.

Police said they have started the process of filing the first information report (FIR) against five people. Anil Paraskar, Raigad superintendent of police (SP), said the FIR would be filed against the builder as well as the contractor, engineer, architect and the building consultant.

Paraskar said the collapsed building had 95 residents. “Fortunately, 75 had managed to come out before the incident occurred. The person, who died in the incident, is not a resident of the building. He has been identified as Sameer Sayyed,” he added.

The Tariq Garden building collapsed at around 7pm on Monday, according to local residents. The 10-year-old multi-storey building housed more than 40 apartments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet on Tuesday he was saddened by the accident and President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed his distress over the tragedy.
