Avowed: Obsidian Entertainment stays busy with new first-person RPG

Avowed is the next big game to come from Obsidian Entertainment.

South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, The Outer Worlds, Grounded and now Avowed. Obsidian Entertainment is a beast of a studio right now, pumping out game after game at a breakneck pace.

The acclaimed developer, best known its ability to deliver award-winning role-playing games, is at it again with Avowed. Having joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018, Obsidian’s first game under the banner was revealed to be Grounded, a cooperative survival game set to release as an early access game on July 28.

Further down the developer’s pipeline though is Avowed, a brand new first-person role-playing game set in Eora, the same world that Pillars of Eternity and its sequel takes place in. Admittedly, not much is known about Avowed right now but the simple announcement teaser suggests swordplay and spellcasting. It honestly reminded me of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, although I’m sure the combat systems will be more in line with Pillars of Eternity.

Point being, while Grounded looks fun and all, Avowed seems much more in Obsidian’s wheelhouse. A straight-up fantasy RPG from one of the most renowned role-playing studios. What more can we ask for — besides details, that is.

Avowed is listed as coming to Xbox Series X and Windows 10 PC. It’s also confirmed to be an Xbox Game Pass title, which means subscribers of the service will get to play it day-one.

Beyond what was shown in the teaser and what was announced for platforms, we don’t know much else about Avowed. That doesn’t mean we can’t be excited for it though. Of the many games shown off during the Xbox Games Showcase, Avowed has the potential to be one of the biggest upcoming releases, if only for the history Obsidian has with RPGs.
