She was born in Portland, Maine on November 9, 1922, a daughter of Frederic and Ruth Whitney Mansfield, the youngest of their six children. After her father’s death in 1929, the family moved to Fitchburg, MA. On June 6, 1942, Barbara married Everett J. Eastman. When World War II ended, they moved to East Longmeadow, MA where they resided until his death in 1981.

This new chapter in her life brought Barbara to Broadalbin, NY, where she and her daughter, Linda, opened the Broadalbin Christian Bookstore on her 60th birthday in 1982. It was her joy to work in the store until March of this year when the coronavirus pandemic required the store to be temporarily closed. Barbara wanted everyone that she met to know the love and peace that a relationship with Jesus Christ can bring.

Mrs. Eastman loved volunteering at Camp Cedarbrook in the Adirondacks and meeting the staff every year. She had a special place in her heart for the younger staff, who called her “Nana,” and she enjoyed getting to know them and corresponding with them after camp closed for the season.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Mildred Downey, Eleanor Harrington, Dorothy Shepard, and Wallace and Whitney Mansfield.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda Eastman and Kathy (Ron) Lavoie; her beloved grandchildren, Daniel, Justin, and Evan Lavoie, Mary (Patrick) Hassett, and Elizabeth (Dylan) Slaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends of all ages. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of her great-granddaughter, Veronica Hassett.

A private graveside service will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Cedarbrook-Next Generation Fund, Samaritan’s Purse, or Wycliffe Bible Translators, in care of the funeral home.
