The Biden administration is tapping Jason Owens, a 27-year veteran of the Border Patrol, to be the company’s subsequent chief.

Owens at present leads the Border Patrol’s sector in Del Rio, Texas, which has emerged in recent times as one of the busiest parts of the border.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas known as Owens a “talented, selfless, and inspiring leader” in an announcement saying the transfer. “I have worked with Chief Owens; I am inspired by his commitment to the mission, and am grateful to him for his continued service in this new leadership role,” Mayorkas stated.

Owens will take over when the present Border Patrol chief, Raul Ortiz, steps down on the finish of the month.

Ortiz introduced his retirement after the tip of Title 42, the pandemic border restrictions that expired final month. The variety of border apprehensions has dropped sharply since then, although the Biden administration warns that these declines could possibly be non permanent.

Owens would be the third chief to guide the Border Patrol and its workforce of roughly 19,000 brokers beneath Biden, and the twenty sixth general.

Owens took over as head of the Del Rio sector in late 2021, a number of months after hundreds of migrants, largely from Haiti, tried to cross the border into Del Rio and located themselves confined in a camp on the banks of the Rio Grande.

He beforehand served as sector chief in Maine, and in addition led the Border Patrol academy in New Mexico.
