Aman Bhushan Hajari of JD(U) defeated RJD’s Ganesh Bharti and Congress’s Atirek Kumar in Kusheshwar Asthan reserved seat. Hajari won with a margin of 12,695 votes over Bharti.

In the Tarapur Assembly constituency, JD(U)’s Rajeev Kumar Singh defeated RJD’s Arun Kumar by 3852 votes. Congress’s Rajesh Kumar Mishra was also in the fray from the seat.

The bypolls in Bihar had become an interesting contest with former CM and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav returning to election campaigning after almost six years.

RJD, which had emerged as the single largest party in the 243-member Bihar Assembly after last year’s elections, was aiming to defeat Nitish Kumar’s ruling JD(U) in both the bypolls.

Bypolls in Tarapur constituency in Munger district and Kusheshwar Asthan in Darbhanga district were necessitated following the deaths of MLAs Mewalal Choudhary and Shashi Bhushan Hazari – both of the ruling JD(U).

A voter turnout of 49 per cent was recorded in Tarapur while Kusheshwar Athan witnessed a 50 per cent turnout.

The RJD had expressed the hope that it would be able to win both the seats due to the anti-incumbency, the caste factor and Lalu’s electrifying campaign.

“We’ll win by a handsome margin. If the administration or other people will try to create any disturbance, I’m here in Darbhanga. I’ll not let the mandate be stolen by anybody. Our teams are here and overseeing everything,” RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav had said this morning.

The JD(U), on the other hand, was expecting to retain both the seats due to the goodwill of CM Nitish Kumar and the ‘sushasan’ witnessed during his regime over the last 16 years.

Also in the fray were the parties led by Chirag Paswan and his rebellious uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras. Both had split ahead of the bypolls and Chirag now leads a faction of the Lok Janshakti Party founded by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan.
