An outcry from some parents and students led the Bristol Township School Board to reconsider their August decision to scrap the fall sports season.
At a special meeting Wednesday, the school board voted 5-3 against a motion to rescind their August decision. Board members Barbara Bill, Kellie Buchanan, and Constance Moore voted to start fall sports, while Christopher Harkins, Donna Kelly, Gallus Obert, Amanda Geist, and Board President James Morgan voted nay. Board member Angela Nober was not present.
A group of parents and students upset with the school board decision led to a meeting with the district recently that pushed the school board to the reconsideration vote.
The district said late last month that their decision was based on keeping students, staff, and the community safe during the pandemic.
In August, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) approved schools to continue fall sports if they wanted to. Many schools in the area did restart sports, but not all PIAA schools did.
Before the PIAA decision, Gov. Tom Wolf issued a “strong recommendation” to hold off on sports until 2021.
Toward the end of August, Bucks County Health Department Director Dr. David Damsker said he felt schools could make sports work if precautions were in place.
The district said in late August that they would suspend athletics, band, and cheerleading activities for the fall, but the athletic department will be “working with coaches and directors to implement a plan to continue voluntary off-season workouts after the start of the academic year.”
