While it’s on a bye week, the Texas Tech football team got some news Monday.

The Red Raiders learned their Nov. 13 matchup with Iowa State will have the kickoff decided with six-day notice.

Texas Tech is coming off a 52-21 road loss to Oklahoma, it marked the first of four ranked opponents — at the time — left on the Red Raiders regular season schedule.

The setback was also the debut of interim head coach Sonny Cumbie, who was elevated to head coach after Matt Wells was fired back on Oct. 25.

The Texas Tech defense was unable to slow down freshman phenom quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw a season-high six touchdown passes — completing 23 of 30 for 402 yards, all season highs — as No. 4 Oklahoma stayed undefeated with its 17th win in a row and 10th straight against the Red Raiders.

Tech quarterback Donovan Smith played the last 2 1/2 quarters, his most extended action of the season. Midway through the second quarter, starting signal caller Henry Colombi was run out of bounds and took a spill, and officials flagged the Sooners for unnecessary roughness.

Smith, a freshman, finished 17 of 22 for 192 yards. In the previous six games, he had been limited mostly to a narrow package of run plays.

Following the open week, Texas Tech (5-4, 2-4 in the Big 12) is slated to take on the Cyclones (5-3, 3-2), who were knocked out of the Associated Press Top 25 rankings following a 38-31 road loss to West Virginia.
