Commonwealth Games, Day 2, Live Updates: Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinched India’s first gold medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Chanu won the gold in the 49kg clean and jerk event. Chanu lifted a total of 201kg to give India their third medal at the games. In table tennis, the women’s team is taking on Malaysia in the quarterfinals. Manika Batra got India back in the contest after she defeated Ying Ho in a five-game thriller. Sreeja Akula then gave India a 2-1 lead after beating Li Chang in straight games. Earlier, weightlifter Gururaja Poojary gave India their second medal of the ongoing Commonwealth Games with his bronze in the men’s 61kg category on Saturday. Gururaja finished third in the standings with a total of 269 kg lift. He had stood fourth after the conclusion of the snatch round with a best of 118 kg lift but put a further better performance to finish on the podium. Before Gururaja’s match, weightlifter Sanket Sargar brought home India’s first medal at the ongoing event with a silver in the 55kg men’s final. Sargar lifted 135 kg in his first attempt of clean and jerk before missing a weight of 139 kg in his second and third attempts in the final. Notably, he had lifted a highest weight of 113 kg in snatch in his third attempt and was leading the race in the men’s 55 kg final until Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan surpassed him by a narrow margin to win gold. After Sargar’s win, India cleanswept Sri Lankan 5-0 in the badminton Mixed Team Event. On the other hand, India shared spoils with Malta in a 16-16 draw at the men’s triples event of Lawn Bowls. Later, the Indian women’s hockey team will square off against Wales in Pool A clash while Lovlina Borgohain will also start off her campaign against Ariane Nicholson in the 66kg weight category. In mixed team badminton, the Indian contingent will square off against Australia. The opening day of the Games turned out to be fruitful for swimmer Srihari Nataraj as he was able to qualify for the finals. The table tennis teams defeated South Africa and Barbados with identical 3-0 victories, but Australia defeated India in a Pool A women’s cricket match.
