Former India skipper MS Dhoni brought down curtains on his illustrious international career on Saturday. With the decision, he ended his 16-year association with Team India. During those 16 years, Team India reached unprecedented heights and MS Dhoni played a very key role in it.

Indian cricket enjoyed one of its most successful phases when MS Dhoni was the captain of the side. Under his captaincy, Team India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy in addition to winning the Asia Cup and several other tournaments and series.

Under Dhoni, India also moved to the top of the ICC Test Rankings for the first time. As ODI captain, he has won 55 percent of the 200 games he captained the team (110 wins, 74 defeats, 5 tied, 11 NR).  In T20Is, MS Dhoni has a 58.33 win percentage  with 42 victories in 72 games as captain. With the bat, he scored over 10,000 runs in ODIs and more than 16,00 in T20Is.

Bharat Ratna for MS Dhoni:

A day after Dhoni announced his retirement, Congress Leader P C Sharma took to Twitter to state that the legendary cricketer should be conferred the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. Tagging Prime Minster Office’s official Twitter handle, the congress politician tweeted:

“The gem of India who has established Indian cricket as a winner in the entire world, great captain MS Dhoni should be bestowed with Bharat Ratna,” tweeted P C Sharma.

So far, only one sportsperson has been bestowed with the prestigious award. In 2014, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was conferred the Bharat Ratna. The former India became the first sportsperson, as well as the youngest person to receive the award.

As far as Dhoni is concerned, he has so far received the Padma Bhusan, Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna which is the highest honour given for sports in India.
