No coronavirus patient under home isolation in Delhi has died in July, shows study
- Not a single coronavirus patient under home isolation in the city has died in July and there has been a “sharp decline” in daily fatality figures in the past two weeks, a Delhi government study on COVID-19 deaths has said.
- The city’s Health department presented these findings to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday, days after he directed them to study all COVID-19 deaths in the last fortnight to understand what steps could be taken to further reduce the number of fatalities.
- “During the June 24 to July 8 fortnight, a total of 691 deaths took place in Delhi, which is an average of 46 deaths per day during this period,” the government said in a statement.
Meghalaya makes 14-day quarantine mandatory for BSF personnel entering state
- The Meghalaya government has asked the BSF to ensure their personnel coming to the state from other parts of the country undergo 14-day institutional quarantine mandatorily before they could resume duty.
- A number of COVID-19 cases have been detected among Border Security Force personnel. Of the 215 active cases in Meghalaya, 132 were personnel posted at the BSF frontier headquarters here.
- The BSF returnees should mandatorily quarantine for 14 days at institutional facilities, regardless of being tested negative or positive, said Health Commissioner and Secretary Sampath Kumar in a letter to the inspector general of the BSF frontier headquarters.

Biocon gets DCGI nod for use of Itolizumab for treatment of COVID-19 patients
- Biotechnology major Biocon on Saturday said it has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for use of its biologic drug Itolizumab for the treatment of moderate to severe COVID-19 patients.
- The company has received the DCGI approval to market Itolizumab injection 25mg/5mL solution for emergency use in India for the treatment of cytokine release syndrome in moderate to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients due to COVID-19, Biocon said in a BSE filing.
- Itolizumab is the first novel biologic therapy to be approved anywhere in the world for treating patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 complications, it added.
Nizamuddin Markaz case: Delhi court grants bail to 75 Thailand, Nepal nationals
- A Delhi court on Saturday granted bail to 75 foreign nationals from Thailand and Nepal who participated in the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Nizamuddin, which had reportedly become an epicentre of coronavirus spread across the country.
- Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur granted bail to the foreign nationals on furnishing personal bonds of Rs 10,000 each.
- Advocates Ashima Mandla and Mandakini Singh appeared for 40 Thailand nationals and advocate Fahim Khan appeared for 35 Nepal nationals.
Centre takes various measures to prevent crop losses
- The Centre has taken various steps to control locust swarms, and carried out operations in over 1.5 lakh hectares area since April 11 to prevent crop losses.
- “As per the instructions of Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, continuous action is being taken to control locust swarms,” an official statement said on Saturday.
- Starting from April 11 till July 9, control operations have been done in 1,51,269 hectares area in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana by Locust Circle Offices (LCOs), it added.
Trump working on executive order to establish merit-based immigration system: White House
- President Donald Trump is working on an executive order to establish a merit-based immigration system in the US, the White House has said.
- The White House statement came soon after Trump, in an interview with Spanish-language Telemundo News channel, said he is working on an executive order on immigration that will include a “road to citizenship” for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme.
- The DACA programme provides for work permits and other protections for people brought to the US as children by undocumented parents. It affects an estimated 700,000 young people, many of whom are Indian or South Asian descent.
2 aides of Vikas Dubey held in Thane
- Two absconding aides of slain gangster Vikas Dubey have been arrested by the ATS from Thane in Maharashtra, an official said on Saturday.
- The accused Arvind alias Guddan Trivedi and his driver Sonu Tiwari are wanted in connection with recent killing of eight police personnel in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district and also in the 2001 murder of minister of state Santosh Shukla, he said.
- A team of Juhu unit of Mumbai ATS arrested the duo from Kolshet in neighbouring Thane, he said.

- India’s 2018 Tiger Census has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s largest camera trapping wildlife survey.
- The fourth cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018 estimated 2,967 tigers or 75 per cent of the global tiger population in the nation. Its results were declared to the nation on Global Tiger Day last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

WHO believes ‘unknown pneumonia’ in Kazakhstan could be COVID-19
- The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday (local time) that the “unknown pneumonia” reported in Kazakhstan could be COVID-19, CGTN News reported.
- Michael Ryan, executive director of the Health Emergencies Program of the WHO, said at a regular briefing that the pneumonia outbreak in the Central Asian nation was “certainly on our radar,” and the WHO is working with local health authorities amid a rise in reported cases.
- He also pointed out that there’s been a big surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, with over 10,000 confirmed over the last seven days.
Virus cases go past 800 in Amravati

Tamil Nadu asks Centre to fly back 40 fishermen stranded in Iran
- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palanniswami has urged the central government to arrange for the repatriation by air of 40 fishermen from the state stranded in Iran.
- Palaniswami in a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday thanked for bringing back 681 fishermen safely to the state by Indian Navy Ship INS Jalashwa on July 1.
- “Further, around 40 fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been left behind due to inadequacy of space in the ship. Therefore, I request you to arrange for their repatriation at the earliest to Tamil Nadu in a special flight,” Palaniswami said.
RBI alleviating liquidity stress to offset COVID-19 impact

- “From February 2019 onwards, on a cumulative basis, we had cut the repo rate by 250 basis points till the onset of COVID-19. Punjab Minister ugres re-examination of revised UGC guidelines
- Punjab Higher Education Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa has written to Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, requesting him to re-examine the revised guidelines issued by the HRD Ministry and University Grants Commission (UGC).
- According to an official release, the revised guidelines mandate Vice-Chancellors of all universities and colleges to compulsorily conduct examinations for terminal classes/semesters of undergraduate and postgraduate courses by September 30.
- In his letter, Bajwa said, “Considering the larger public interest of successfully containing the COVID-19 pandemic, allow the state government to implement its decision by not making the MHRD/UGC revised guidelines dated July 6, mandatory on the state government.”
- He said that the MHRD/UGC guidelines that make the conduct of final term examination mandatory has “unnerved all the stakeholders”.
- The minister said that conducting online examinations for such a large number of students, the majority of whom reside in remote rural areas without access to computers/laptops and the internet, is not possible in the state.
