A new studio ‘black box’ theatre at the Manning Entertainment Centre is set to provide a cultural benefit to the Mid Coast community and broader region. The development application from Austin McFarland Pty Ltd for the alterations and additions to Taree’s theatre was approved by MidCoast Council during the September 23 meeting, subject to a number of conditions. RELATED: The new theatre facility will provide greater flexibility for the staging of entertainment and community events. An assessment of the application found no adverse environmental, economic or social impacts. No submissions were received by council when the development application was put on public exhibition and adjoining owners notified of the plans. The new work is set to be carried out in three stages: Stage 1 – Studio Theatre, Crossover Corridor, Foyer, Audience Amenities, Communications rooms and Forecourt Stage 2 – Dressing Rooms, Dock and Holding Kitchen Stage 3 – Extension of Service Roadway The current theatre and amenities will not be altered, apart from an opening in the existing foyer for connection to the new foyer space. Conditions of approval: what must be satisfied prior to the start of any demolition work, complied with prior to the issue of the construction certificate, prior to the start of building construction, during development work, prior to issue of occupation certificate and relating to ongoing use. The existing entertainment centre has a floor area of some 1920m2 and height of 18.8m (fly tower) and the proposed theatre will give an additional floor area of 740m2 and its height will be 10.6m. The studio theatre will be built immediately adjacent to the existing Manning Entertainment Centre and give a new accessible entry point that ensures safe and easy access to and from the proposed building, as well as landscaping and advertising, without detracting from the existing connectivity of the theatre and Tourist Information Centre building.
