The first prep football game in Dickson County amid the COVID-19 pandemic is about a week away — and it’s the most-hyped local game of the regular season, between the county’s rival schools.

“That’s probably one of our biggest games, that is the Creek Wood-Dickson County game,” said Schools Director Dr. Danny Weeks at the July 30 school board meeting “There is a lot of planning and a lot of preparation that needs to go in.”

Dickson County High School is hosting Creek Wood on Friday, Aug. 21. Game starts at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Ticket sales for the 1,500 tickets available have started this week for students as well as parents of players, cheerleaders, and band members. Any remaining tickets will go on sale to the public Monday, Aug. 17 at the stadium ticket booth, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Limited to two tickets each. No walk-up tickets will be sold.

According to school administrators, the following procedures will be required for attendees of the game: Temperature checks at every gate; masks worn by all spectators the entire game; no tailgating allowed; and everyone must have a ticket.

TSSAA input

Gov. Bill Lee gave permission in executive order No. 55, which was signed on July 31, to allow contact sports, such as football and girls soccer, to be held this fall.

The high school golf season started July 27. Cross country, girls soccer and volleyball start their seasons on Aug. 17 with the first high school football games scheduled for Aug. 20.

Some school districts have delayed their season start, including Montgomery County Schools, which chose not play the first two weeks of the season.

Earlier this month, TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress said the organization was “giving (kids) the opportunity to play.”

The safety guidelines the TSSAA is asking its schools to enforce include, among other things, temperature checks for all coaches, players, team personnel before every practice, and screening for COVID-19 symptoms on a weekly basis.

If an athlete, coach or member of team personnel were to have a temperature over 100.4 degrees or present symptoms of COVID-19, they may not participate until a medical provider has cleared them to safely do so.

Dickson Co. Schools requirements

Last week, Dickson County Schools sent out a letter providing guidelines for prep athletics countywide. The letter included the following:

“In cooperation with Governmental orders, TSSAA guidelines, and District safety guidelines, we have carefully planned a return for fall athletics. Our coaches, athletic directors, administrators, and teams have worked to provide opportunities for our student-athletes, while ensuring their safety, and the safety of our community.”

The letter goes on to summarize some of the guidelines and protocols that will impact fall sports, including:

-Schools will modify seating capacity at events and will specify certain seating areas within the venue.

-Ticket distribution plans will be announced by the individual schools. Priority will be given to families of athletes, cheerleaders, bands, etc.

-Prior to entry, spectators must answer screening questions, and have their temperature taken. -Anyone with a temperature greater than 100 may not attend the event.

-Spectators must wear facial coverings.

-Spectators are not allowed on the fields / playing areas.  Restroom space will be limited.

-Concession stands will be limited.
