Former TV weatherman Eric Sorensen has gained the Illinois House seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Cheri Bustos, defeating Republican challenger Esther Joy King.

His election within the state’s seventeenth District brings to Congress the first openly gay member from Illinois and is a win for Democrats seeking to hold seats, particularly in rural areas.

The seat opened when Bustos introduced her retirement earlier this 12 months, probably leaving Sen. Dick Durbin as Illinois’ solely congressional Democrat outdoors of Chicago.
