The formalities have been completed. Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been officially appointed as the next head coach for the senior Indian men’s team. The Indian cricket board (BCCI) made the announcement on Wednesday night, saying he will take over from Ravi Shastri from the home series against New Zealand, which starts on November 17.
TOI was the first to report about BCCI striking a deal with Dravid hours after president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah had a marathon meeting with him on the night of IPL final in Dubai on Oct 15.
The board has not yet released the terms of appointment but it’s understood that Dravid has agreed on a two-year contract with an annual salary of Rs 10 crore.
BCCI sources told TOI the process was a formality as the deal was done in Dubai. BCCI didn’t even appoint a third member in the CAC after former India pacer Madan Lal had to step back because he is now past 70 years of age. TOI understands there weren’t many applications after it emerged that Dravid was in talks with the board. Former India batter VVS Laxman was only backup if Dravid would have had declined the offer. Dravid was head and shoulders above the applicants.
“The Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh met on Wednesday and unanimously appointed Rahul Dravid as the head coach of Team India (Senior Men). The former India captain will take charge from the upcoming home series against New Zealand,” read a BCCI statement on Wednesday.
Ganguly and Shah had pushed for Dravid realizing Indian cricket is on the cusp of a transition. Dravid will have a busy run with three ICC events across formats lined up over the next two years.
“It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Under Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward. Having worked closely with most of the boys, either at NCA, U19 and India ‘A’ setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day. There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential,” Dravid said in a statement.
“Rahul’s effort at the NCA has nurtured several young cricketing talents who have gone on to represent the country on the international stage. I am hopeful that his new stint will take Indian cricket to new heights,” Ganguly said.
“With two World Cups scheduled to take place in the next two years, it is important to have a seamless transition, and the former India captain is the right man for the job. Having provided the much-needed direction to NCA and overseen the progression of the boys at India U-19 and India A level, we believe this is also a natural progression for him as a coach,” Shah remarked.
The process to select Dravid’s support staff will start now. The last date for applications for the post of bowling coach, fielding coach, batting coach and trainer was Wednesday. As per BCCI protocol, the selectors and head coach will have the major say in the appointments. TOI had reported on Oct 12 that former India pacer Paras Mhambrey, who has been Dravid’s trusted lieutenant, is the frontrunner for the bowling coach’s post while Vikram Rathour is set to be retained as the batting coach.
