England eyeing second new ball

Just a little over 14 overs to go before England get their hands on the second new ball. The last couple of hours remain and it’s a tricky one for Pakistan. In all probability this is heading towards a draw, but with Pakistan, do you ever know? Joe Root rushing through his overs.

Anderson creates history

OUT! There it is, England’s James Anderson becomes first fast bowler in history to take 600 Test wickets. He’s waited, and waited and finally got it. Good length ball that takes off, and Azhar, unable to keep the ball down nicks it to first slip, where Joe Root, doesn’t drop it. The first fast bowler in history to get to that mark. We doubt anyone else can get there. Salute, Jimmy!

Back-to-back maidens from Archer

Archer keeping Pakistan on his toes. Pakistan unable to score off his in his first two overs of the day. Anderson bowling with him at the other end and is making sure the batsman puts bat on ball. A beautiful line he’s bowling. He probably hasn’t forgotten the flurry of drop catches off his bowling so wants to keep it straight in hope of getting a bowled or LBW.

20:45 hrs IST

It’s time!

After warming up the players are out there! Yes, we’re pinching ourselves as well. Jofra Archer to resume proceedings bowling round the wicket to Azhar Ali. All eyes on one person in particular, James Anderson. Come on, Joe. Give him the ball already!

20:30 hrs IST

It’s ON ladies and gentlemen

It’s official. The final day of the English summer will not be a complete washout. Play will begin at 8:45 PM India time with 42 overs to be bowled.

20:15 hrs IST

Play likely to start 20:45 IST

The umpires are still out there inspecting. This time there seems to be a problematic area near the cover boundary, the word is coming. That said, another inspection is going to take place in 15 minutes, which is 8PM India time and we may start things up 15 minutes after that. It’s happening, it’s happening!

19:40 hrs IST

Another inspection due… at 20:05 IST

The sun is out and things are looking a lot better than they were about a couple of hours ago. A couple of areas are still worth concerning, near the bowler’s run-up mark. The soppers are doing their job and hopefully we’ll have some word at the next inspection time.

19:00 hrs IST

What happens if it’s a washout?

Well, quite simply, with no more Test cricket for England this year, James Anderson will have to wait for the tour of India to pick up his 600th Test wicket. That said, his record on sub-continent pitches isn’t the greatest, so will he be an automatic pick? Not too sure he will be. Also, given that today is the last day of this Test series, props to ECB and everyone involved for getting two Test series in England amid the pandemic. With the bio-secure bubble and everything, it’s all been pretty impressive on part of the ECB.

18:30 hrs IST

Next inspection in an hour

So the rain has stopped completely and the next inspection will take place at 19:30 IST. Let’s not get our hopes too high but the Super Soppers are working full throttle.

17:30 hrs IST

UPDATE!

The side covers have been taken off but there’s still plenty of puddles on the field. The Super Soppers are doing their bit and so must we. That said, by no means have we seen the last of rain today. There’s more to come as per the weather forecast

17:00 hrs IST

Really frustrating

Well, the latest from the ground reports that what started off as a light drizzle has transformed into rain in Southampton. Oh god, this just keeps getting worse. Jimmy, if you are reading this, we feel for you, mate.

16:45 hrs IST

Out of nowhere, the sun is out

Typical English weather, pouring down at one moment, bright and sunny the other. But if the sun stays out for long, it sure will help quicken up the drying out process. Maybe, just maybe, there’s hop?

16:15 hrs IST

The rain has stopped but…

… the official inspection will take place in two hours from now, which is 18:10 IST. The groundstaff is already out there but such has been the intensity of this rain that it’s going to take quite a bit of time for repair work.

15:45 hrs IST

BBC reports on rain in Southampton

There is a bad news for England fans. According to BBC reports, the groundstaff is predicting that it will take at least 4-5 hours delay after the rain stops to dry the outfield. Talk about cutting it close.

15:30 hrs IST

Match start delayed

We have a delayed start in Southampton due to wet outfield at the moment. Stay tuned for more updates.

15:15 hrs IST

Delayed start expected

One can expect a delayed start in the day as it is still quite wet in Southampton. The covers are on, it looks pretty dark.

15:00 hrs IST

One wicket away – James Anderson

James Anderson is one wicket away from becoming the first fast bowler to claim 600 Test wickets. But will rain and wet outfield derail his plans?
