For wildly sweaty dancing beer drinking antics it don’t get finer than Jimmy Willing and the Real Gone Hick Ups. Music is returning to venues – as solos and duos – not bands like the Hick Ups. So why not check out this fabulous new clip, inspired by the story of a boy from the Western plains of NSW who sees the Pacific Ocean for the very first time in his life. Filmed by Clancy Robinson the clip is narrative driven and full of wry nuance. It’s unorthodox, punk and guerrilla. Clancy had Jimmy and the boys climbing up road signs, jumping fences and running fast when the farmer got on his quad bike and headed their way.
The First Time That I Ever Saw The Ocean is the third single from Jimmy’s new album Horse Operas. So while we must be content to dance it up at home, go to youtube and knock yourself out!

How does it feel to be a migrant or refugee settling in a new country? You might have to learn a new language, learn how to drive, how to find a job and understand countless other things that comprise the culture of your new home.
Traversing the memories of childhood migration, the challenges of settling in a new country, the joys of learning new skills, shared experiences, and the importance of community connections, is a pop-up art exhibition called Re-making Place, to be held at Ignite Studios, Ballina, October 13–18.
Hosted by Ballina Region for Refugees and supported by Southern Cross University, the exhibition captures settlement experiences of participants in the BR4R Homestay program and Anglicare North Coast’s 3Es to Freedom Program. At the Northern Rivers Community Gallery.

If there’s one thing a year of lockdown has taught us, it’s that life’s too short not to be doing what you love. Get in touch with your creative side! The Byron School of Art (BSA) is now accepting applications for their 2021 year-long courses.
2021 will be BSA’s sixth year offering a 3-year course in Contemporary Visual Arts studies. This small team of dedicated and passionate artists couldn’t have dreamed that their little studio-based art school of 2013 would become the thriving and celebrated art school that it is today.
All through the week their Mullubimby studios are buzzing with 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year students immersed in their work, investigating contemporary ideas and practices while learning the practical skills needed to build and sustain an informed visual arts practice. Students can study for one to three years in BSA’s structured year-long courses, incorporating disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D studies, installation practice, digital media, design principles, colour theory, art history and critical thinking.

With theatre and cinemas now returning to 50 per cent capacity it’s a great excuse to settle into some nice air-conditioned entertainment as the hotter months approach. The Byron Theatre has a fabulous family friendly lineup of films for the holiday period in their registered Covid Safe venue.
With reduced audience size and a ticket system that automatically allocates a safe space between one ticket group and the next, Byron Theatre staff are dedicated to keeping their events safe for all.

Lightbox #2 Friday – Sunday next to Target at the Ocean Shores Shopping CentreThe Light of the Ocean
There’s a little magic happening in the Ocean Village car park. Right beside Target is Lightbox, a pop up visual art installation and light gallery that is bringing artists and community together to reimagine this overlooked space! After the success of the first Lightbox exhibition, Dashboard Animals, Pete Castaldi and Arianna Bosi are back in the car park with Lightbox #2.
This weekend they are running another three nights of the Lightbox exhibition, with an added bonus!
Bring a camp stool, dress for the weather, grab some food from Sabi or Flavour, and on Friday and Sunday nights enjoy, Open Screen, an un-curated program from local artists, up in light. From sunset till 9pm.
Saturday there will be a curated program from 7–7.45pm and then the first Lightbox Watch Party; hopefully the first of many (watch this space). This Party (Sat the 10 October at 8pm) sees the notorious 6 Quick Chicks – a bunch of brilliant performers across all disciplines, led by Vashti Hughes – stream live from SUSS (Sydney Underground Streaming Sessions). 6 Quick Chicks will get ten minutes each, and no holds barred.
