Several months ago we had to say goodbye to our oldest male cat due to some health issues. Since then, the house has felt a little more empty, despite having three dogs and two cats remaining.

However, last week while scrolling Facebook, I saw a friend was needing to re-home some kittens that a recent adoptee had birthed. One of the kittens was a grey tiger with marbling instead of stripes. I have said before, but at some point in the pandemic I became some kind of mushy man, and I audibly awed when I saw the kitten. After some back and forth with my friend, and my wife, we all settled on picking up Ash this past Saturday.

When we arrived to meet the cat, Ash and siblings were playing around and doing usual kitten things. As I was holding Ash, having made up my mind on the adoption, my wife finds another kitten that she decides to adopt as well.

When we arrived home with the two kittens, things in our house became a little unhinged. Two of our dogs were giddy with excitement and curiosity, obviously the kids are also brimming with delight. However, our two adult cats were not pleased, and basically threw a cat temper tantrum.

During the first two days of the adoption, the kittens were snuggly and mostly sedentary, probably feeling a bit overwhelmed with their new environment, the excitement of the kids and dogs, and the hostility they were shown by Boots and Raymond. At one point we actually watched Raymond continually swat at one of the kittens until our Coton de Tulear lived up to his name and chased Raymond off and away from the kitten. Chase was even unfazed when he returned to my wife’s lap and was greeted by a tiny, hissing beast.

After a few days, the kittens have come out of their shells, and have really taken over the household. The dogs are a combination of big brother and sister, and mother hens all at once. Meanwhile, there has been some minuscule softening shows by the adult cats, and it seems they no longer despise us and the kittens. Now they only hate us.

Now I have two little fur balls that can fit into cracks and crevices in my house that I didn’t even know existed. My furniture has thus far survived, although for the most part the attacks on the fabric have from the inside. Also, my arms and legs look like I have gotten into an argument with a razor blade, with micro slices all over.

I suppose it is all worth it to be able to pet and hold these adorable little devils for approximately 15 minutes each day. Then, when I am not holding them, I get to watch these balls of fur race and roll around my house like the monsters in the 1980s low budget horror flick Critters.

All in all I currently have zero regrets expanding the Nunn Zoo. I am sure that will change down the road, but at least I have penned this gem to reflect on why I would make such a poor decision.
