Farmers Call Off Agitation In UP After Promises Of Compensation

New Delhi:

The farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, who have been protesting over yesterday’s deaths, have reached an understanding with the government and called off the protest from Ground Zero.  After a meeting with the police this morning, the farmers agreed to cremate the bodies of the four people who were allegedly mowed down by a car carrying the son of Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra yesterday.

Four of the farmers had died and several others were injured. Four others died in the violence that followed.

The government has promised to pay a compensation of Rs 45 lakh to the families of those who died. The injured will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh.

A murder case has been filed against Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son, Ashish Mishra, who, the farmers alleged, was driving the vehicle and hit the men protesting against the minister’s visit.

Today the police assured the farmers that the investigation will take place on basis of the complaints filed by families of the deceased.

Mr Mishra, the junior home minster, has denied that his son was present on the spot. “There were miscreants who attacked workers with sticks and swords,” he said, alleging that the farmers died when the car turned over.

“My son was present at the venue of the (Deputy Chief Minister’s) event… all through, I was accompanying the deputy chief minister,” he had said.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella group representing the protesting farm unions, identified the dead as Lovepreet Singh, 24, Nachattar Singh, 60, Daljeet Singh, 32, and Gurwinder Singh, 20.

Four others have been injured.

Upset over a recent speech by Mr Mishra, the farmers were trying to stop the visit of Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. The two were expected to attend a function at Mr Mishra’s locality.
