Notable: The Raiders return to Section 2 after two seasons in Section 1. They won the Section 2 title in 2007.

Quotable: “Our program has come a long way in four years. We have a dedicated group and had great numbers over the summer preparing. We have gotten much stronger and have physically matured in some spots (and) our skill position players are faster.” — Raiders coach Dean Owens

The skinny: The Raiders return two of the top skill guys in the league in RB Dominic Caruso and WR Trey Freeman, both juniors, and a young lineup that could be a year away from challenging for a postseason berth. Caruso is coming off a 1,000-yard rushing season and is closing in on program records for career rushing yards, TDs and points; he’s already set the mark for carries in a season and a career. He’s stronger and faster, and is expected to continue to elevate his game. Freeman averaged 18.3 yards on 19 receptions last season. QB Ryan Scheivert, one of seven return starters on offense, has made strides since a sophomore season that saw him throw for 809 yards and complete more than half his passes. Seven also return on defense. Roster numbers are again low, with just 31 players in the top three classes. They’ll rely on as many as eight two-way starters, and depth again will be a key concern. After three straight .500 finishes, they slipped last year but could make strides this year and should be more competitive in Section 2.

At the wire: Middle of the pack.
