India has grand plans to grow to be an electronics manufacturing hub. Given that degree of ambition, we must be ready for setbacks — such because the information this week that Taiwan-based Foxconn would not, ultimately, construct a semiconductor manufacturing facility within the western Indian state of Gujarat.

This was an enormous disappointment. Getting some semiconductor fabrication to occur onshore was an important a part of India’s plans to create a homegrown, end-to-end electronics manufacturing provide chain. Those plans, it seems, could have been each too formidable and never formidable sufficient.
