The St. Edmond volleyball team has entered a two-week quarantine period after exposure to a positive COVID-19 case, activities director Zach Steinhoff confirmed on Monday.

The test was officially reported to school officials last Friday. If all goes as planned, the Gaels will return to the court on Friday, Oct. 2.

“We understand that our current situation is not ideal for our students and families; however, our ultimate goal at St. Edmond is the safety and well-being of our students,” Steinhoff said. “Due to frequent and regular conversations regarding safety protocols and procedures, we had four very successful weeks of school to start the year. We are collectively looking at this recent incident as a learning opportunity to improve our current practices and systems in place.

“This is uncharted territory for everyone, but we are learning and growing together to continue to improve the educational and athletic experiences for our students.”

St. Edmond currently sports a 3-2 match record, with victories over Greene County, Storm Lake and Eagle Grove. The Gaels have lost to Clear Lake and Webster City.

Head coach Dee Huss’s squad was slated to face Le Mars Gehlen, Carroll Kuemper and Remsen St. Mary’s at the CYO meet this past weekend. St. Edmond was also supposed to visit Hampton-Dumont this Thursday, host Boone next Tuesday, and head to Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The H-D match is now scheduled for Oct. 5. As of Monday, there are no makeup dates set for Boone or IF-A.

The Gaels square off with Humboldt on the road Oct. 6, followed by home matches against Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (Oct. 8) and Manson Northwest Webster (Oct. 13). Their final regular-season match is at Algona on Oct. 15.
