  • Gokulam Kerala cannot play in the AFC Women’s Championship
  • FIFA suspended AIFF last week due to third party interference
FIFA‘s big decision to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has stunned Indian football and truly cast a major shadow over the sports future in India. Be it the national team, junior team, to clubs across the nation, the entire Indian football pyramid are facing the effects of the decision.
No one has suffered more than the women’s team of Gokulam Kerala Football Club. The Kerala-based outfit had reached Uzbekistan to participate in the AFC Women’s Club Championship when the news broke about FIFA’s decision which has made them ineligible to participate in the competition.
The Narendra Modi-led Indian government’s Sports Ministry had written a special letter to FIFA on Friday (August 19) requesting them to allow Gokulam to take part in the tournament in the interest of younger players. However, the government’s last ditch effort went in vain as FIFA rejected the appeal.

Club president VC Praveen confirmed that the team will be returning to India after the Sports ministry confirmed that FIFA denied their proposal. The Ashalata Devi-led side will be returning to India either on Monday or Tuesday with the lack of flights not allowing the team to fly back over the weekend.

“Yes, it is confirmed. The sports ministry has told us that its request to FIFA and AFC to allow us play in the AFC Women’s Club Championships has been refused. So, we are not playing. The organisers have also told us that we can’t play,”said Praveen to news agency Press Trust of India.

“We were trying for the players to return home on Sunday but there is no flight from Tashkent to India. The earliest flight is on Monday, so we are trying for the players to return home on Monday or Tuesday. Of course, the players are distraught at the turn of events and they had to suffer for no fault of theirs. The club had to suffer,” he added.
