While numerous human activities have come to a standstill due to the COVID 19 lockdown, the Earth seems to enjoy a period of peace like never before.

Scientists have found the proof of noise levels reducing from seismic stations across the globe during the coronavirus pandemic. The scientists say that they have discovered an unusual silence on Earth caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the seismic map, silence was seen as a wave that started from China to the other countries of the world.

The seismic map record the noise created by traffic, industries and various human gatherings. For this study, the scientists recorded the data from a network of 268 seismic sensors spread across 117 countries.

The scientists found that the high-frequency sounds went down by 50 per cent or more in the countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The largest drop was observed in New York and Singapore. The seismic recording was low around the school, colleges and other institutes. The drop was 20 per cent more than what was seen during the holidays.

“The quietening is unprecedented, at least as far as we can go back in time with continuous seismic data,” aid Thomas Lecocq, first author on the study.
