Youth sports will resume on a limited basis this fall in the Greeley recreation ranks, with two outdoor leagues to begin games in late September and early October.

Greeley Recreation, a city department, will offer youth soccer and flag football for boys and girls from 4 to 11-years-old.

Soccer registration is closed for the fall, but spots remain in flag football for kids ages 6-11. Registration is open through Sept. 15. Flag football practices start Sept. 21 and games begin Oct. 3. Additional information on flag football is available on the city of Greeley Recreation website.

Soccer will run leagues for kids ages 4-9 with teams for athletes at the U-6, U-8 and U-10 levels.

The effort to operate the leagues for these sports was made after consideration by Greeley Recreation Department staff on what would be the safest sports for kids during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“We looked at outdoor sports,” said Greeley Recreation Department Sports Supervisor Jerod Cronquist. “With preparations in the league, sanitization and training of staff, we felt we could offer football and soccer.”

Cronquist said the fall of non-COVID years the recreation department would have tackle football, youth volleyball and middle school football and volleyball for youth-age athletes in addition to soccer and flag football. The middle school sports are run in conjunction with Greeley-Evans School District 6.

For adults in the fall, the department would offer volleyball, inline hockey, flag football and softball. None of the other youth sports will be played this fall and softball is the only available sport for adults.

“We looked at who needed programs the most and felt youth and that’s where we put our efforts,” said Greeley Recreation Department Recreation Manager Sheri Lobmeyer. “And what does the community want.”

The city has taken a deliberate approach to reopening recreational facilities since the start of the pandemic earlier his year; only the Family FunPlex and Greeley IceHaus are open this fall. The Greeley Recreation Center and the the Greeley Active Adult Center remain closed.

Centennial Pool, Island Grove Splash Park and Sunrise Splash Park were open during the summer but have closed for the season.

Lobmeyer said city staffers don’t have a timetable on when the closed facilities might reopen.

“I’d love to say next week, but we don’t know,” Lobmeyer said. “It’s hard to plan and looking at the future is different than it was before.”
